failed MOT

Featured Replies

Car failed MOT today, failed on rear brakes, one side is binding. There is also 42% difference between sides

Not bad if that's the only thing. What are you going to do try and service/rebuild or go for replacement?

Difference of 42% is why one brake is binding??

As member above, what's your plan..

Been thinking about replacing callipers, main reason because its easier and if I strip and rebuild them and something goes t#ts up, I would be in the poo. Rear tyres were advisories but I'm not worried about that as I am sourcing 17's to go on it

Unfortunately it's quite a common thing with our ageing calipers, I'm expecting to have to do mine soon, condition isn't great but still going ok. They're not cheap mind, but it's probably a better move than rebuild, could try and get a decent used one/pair from a breaker.

You can get a pair of new calipers from eBay for about £110 in green. :)

Thanks mate, just found a pair for £99.99 or best offer, so that's what I did. Would have been rude not to. ;-)

That's not too bad at all

I paid £95 for a pair of green TRW/Lucas rear calipers, probably the same company in... Birmingham/Wolverhampton as you? They are genuine OEM, just with the VW/Audi logo ground off the caliper body. Just make sure you get the fine-threaded brake line banjo bolt in squarely before doing it up, otherwise you'll muller the thread. Ask me how I know.

The Company on eBay is based in Birmingham so probably the same place. What were they like? I have offered £80 but still waiting for a response

Ask me how I know.

And how do you know? Lol

Calipers were perfect. I had seized pistons on both sides and a completely floppy handbrake. MOT a week or two ago didn't mention anything about the brakes, which is a relief. Just be careul you don't invert the seals in the master cylinder if you use the one- or two-man pumping method. I used a Gunson Eezibleed.

Initially, I bolted the calipers to the carriers before attaching the brake lines. This was fine for one side, but there was a little less give in the brake line and I ended up mashing the thread of the new caliper. Had to buy another new caliper fairly sharpish from the same company, as the car was stuck on stands and I needed it the next day! Doh.

I was amazed when I first got working rear brakes again. You could hear the rear tyres screeching on the brink of locking up if you stomped the middle pedal. And handbrake was solid on three clicks.

It's going to be easier to replace them than rebuild them. The rebuild kit is £40

Less to go wrong too and less fuss.

I even sold my old ones on ebay for 20-30!

That's what I thought, people are asking stupid money for used one's on eBay

I have the same thing once on mi old fabia estate and just took the callipers off cleaned them with steel brush ( not even brake them in pieces) put back everything together and pass the MOT with no problems.

Does not cost me anything only about 1h of work and thats it.

I found an invoice in all the paperwork for the car, it had 2 new callipers in August last year. I got hold of the supplier and he said he can't do anything because I'm not the person that purchased them.

Well that sucks, unfortunately I'm not surprised, was worth a try though. If you don't ask you don't get
