Fitting a towbar

Featured Replies

Removing rear bumper

 1. remove 3 hex screw in each wheel arch

2.  pull the lining away and remove the plastic rivet using a screwdriver to pull out the centre

3. go under the car and remove all of the hex screws

4. remove the rear lights (see owner's manual) and take out all of the lights

5. remove the two plastic rivets underneath where the lights were

6. the bumper is now held on by the two hex screws underneath where the lights were

7. remove these two hex bolts and, in theory, the bumper will slid off backwards, however  I had to

pull the front of the bumper away from the bodywork to achieve this.

BUT

before doing this you will need some help since the bumper will need to be held up to remove the sensors.

8. remove the sensors

Fitting the tow bar

I fitted a Westphalia, but they all fit the same way.

Instructions can be downloaded from P.F.Jones. at http://www.pfjones.co.uk/westfalia_fitting/317102.pdf

This was straight forward except for 3 issues.

1. the heat protector above the silencer needs to be freed. Only undo it at the side by winding down

    the rather odd nuts.

2. there are two possible positions to fit the bar i.e. there are two possible holes for each screw.

I found out the bar needs fitting as far back as possible after having put the whole thing back

    together.

3. A hole needs cutting on the underside of the bumper so the bumper needs pushing back into

place for the size of hole to be determined. I then used masking tape to mark up the hole and

a fine steel cutting blade in the jigsaw.

Fitting the electrics

1. take out the wheel space items (the mat, the supporting foam piece and the wheel well moulding)

2. remove the appropriate grommet an feed the 13 pin socket through

3. Fit this to the plate.

At this stage I have the wiring loom in the wheel well and will take it to the electrician to fit.

Replace the rear bumper

This is just the reversal of removal.

I found that once the rear of the bumper was in position the sides stuck out and they simple need a bang to get them to seat.
