tdi sticky turbo ?

Featured Replies

Can anyone help? my turbo has lost power at low revs, I was stuck in traffic for ages the other day, and then lost turbo.  (2000 1.9tdi elegance )

This happened 2 yrs ago when I had the tracking done, the garage left the engine running while they did the tracking, they faffed about so much, it was on tickover for ages, then it went into limp mode on the way home, I just kept thrashing it until it cleared then it was fine.

I have done the same this time and its getting better, turbo is back, but when i stop and re start its gone again. It comes back after a few mins.( Ive only used it twice on a short trips since this happened ).. Is it a sticky vane again? Whats the cure...  Thanks

I have stripped the turbo over the weekend.

The inlet manifold was clogged up with sooty tar.

Cleaning the turbo was relatively easy as it was on a bench.

The pig is getting under the car to undo the oil pipe union for the return to the engine and forgetting to undo the turbo support bracket nut after I had undone all the exhaust manifold nuts.

You really do need a spring clip tool with a remote handle from ebay for £10.

One of the 5 bolts holding the turbo together was stuck so a mechanic put a gas torch on it for a minute.

The Mr Muscle treatment of removing the EGR pipe and putting (Mr Muscle oven cleaner) Caustic Soda into the turbo has limited effect.

remove the intake manifold first.  Clean the manifold with a load of brake cleaner/solvent (buy a gallon) and a pipe cleaner brush.  Take the egr/anti shudder valve off it to get in.  I start with a long old spoon and scrape most out, then soak in solvent/scrub/soak – an old washing up bowl works.  People say all sorts but I can have it clear of build-up in 45 minutes with this method without breaking a sweat.  The turbo oil feed pipe goes onto a union you may need to grind a spanner down to counter hold to stop it spinning, if you spin the union with the pipe you’ll twist and snap the pipe.  You’ll need a spring clip tool with a remote handle (same sort of clips that are on the pipe from the airbox) to get the intake to the turbo pipe off.  Beware some of the exhaust nuts are 12mm not 13mm don’t round them off with a mal-fitting 13mm.
