Well what an epic day I'm having,went to replace my rear brake discs and pads,first ,them 12point internal spline bolts on the carrier were effing tight,just couldnt move them ,so put everything back together and took it to my mates garage,he struggled and got them loose,so went back home and carried on,got the old disc off and cleaned everything and put the new disc on,then went to put the carrier back on,I then found out the discs were the wrong diameter. So a new set of discs later,almost done at last.Anyone need a set of rear discs ,they are 280mm x 12 mm.

Pretty much mirrors my experience !

 

I did get the bolts off in the end, I used a long torque wrench to get enough leverage, but very fiddly to get on the bolt heads.

 

Then I too found I'd got the wrong discs....

Out of interest, did you guys get the replacement disks by quoting your chassis number or just guesswork? I'm swapping mine over for the bigger 310mm ones next month so looking forward to seeing what issues lay ahead!

The brake upgrade is often recommended and doesn't cost the earth. What are the insurance implications? I presume it has to be declared as a modification each year - are insurers likely to charge more?

Declaring it to insurers will cost more, but not much.

 

When I renewed my insurance earlier this year, I declared the remap and "uprated brakes", and still managed to find a new policy cheaper than the renewal price of my existing policy.

Around £260/yr I think I'm paying.

310mm on the rear, that's quite meaty, but I guess your fronts are correspondingly bigger so the overall balance is about the same ?

yeah balance should be spot on with the four pot Porsche setup on the front. Under extreme use, the front is driven down so the bigger rears should be a nice addition. :) I wondered if Skoda were just putting different setups on the cars despite what the chassis numbers dictated they had, hence my original question. :)

I bought mine a while back from a good dealer on Ebay, did a compatability check on their site which came up ok,I did try to measure the discs on the car but couldn't get an accurate one.The guy at the local motor factors where I bought my replacements from said there were 3 different ones on his system,I took my old rusty one down for comparison. Any way job done now,even painted the rears and fronts of discs with smooth hammerite ( not on any contact areas) might hold of the rust a bit longer.

I painted my fronts with black high temp paint, seems to be holding the rust at bay even after getting properly hot.

 

I painted the rears too...before I realised I'd got the wrong size. Then had to get the correct sized ones in a hurry and didn't have time to paint - they're rusting nicely already....
