Signs of a failing turbo

Featured Replies

I would say the golf would have better sound deadning so a slight turbo noise would not be heard in the cabin,i have had lots of skodas and vw,s and audis and the skodas  always have more road and cabin noise my vrs pd tdi has a slight spool up noise i would say thats all it is ,if the play on the turbo shaft is bad it will smoke on tick over,i would save your money .

No smoke at any time even revving it through gears. It hasn't used any oil in the 3 weeks I've ran it either. There is more people commented that there's whistles than not. Money saved.

I personally wouldn't worry about it....some turbo's whistle more than others.

2.0TDi Turbo's always seem to have an element of whistle, whereas I don't really here it that much on 1.9's

Is your's a 1.8Turbo petrol?...if so, again some whistle some don't

My 1.9tdi whistles quietly from around 1800 to 2500 rpm and was swapped last year. No smoke at all ever and no signs of failing. My old golf gti did the same from the day I got it to the day I sold it 2 years later. Unless it smokes or somehow changes in sound I wouldn't worry too much. Somone one wiser than I once said 90% of what we worry about never happens. Cars really know how to contribute to that 90%

I've recently sold my mk1 Octavia vrs and moved to a mk2 vrs tdi. I really must change my photo!

I agree with the above, Turbo whistle is normal ( lets not forget they spin at and in excess of 100k RPM )  My 1.9Tdi also does the well documented Chatter when you lift of at low revs with high boost, Personally I like the sound.

You would soon know if you have the "Siren" sound, Faint whistle is fine.

I know several people with various VAG 2.0PD and CR based cars, I dont think a single one doesn't make the siren sound. A friend had a Mk4 Golf from new and it started happening at about 40k miles. He sold it years later on 100k, still making the sound but no problems. It would drive me nuts if I had a car which did that though, it makes them sound ****ed!

Only turbo sound from my TFSI is the whooshing of it gobbling up all the air lol :)

Yeah i do miss the turbo noise of my mk1 vrs. I don't miss the fuel economy though!

I actually dont find that too bad. I've come from a nearly new Peugeot 508 estate 2.0 diesel automatic - was a surprisingly decent car but the fuel economy (due to the old school torque converter auto and sheer mass of the thing) was surprisingly poor...long term average was 37mpg and it went as high as 47mpg on a long run. Ended up getting rid as it was financed for doing a lot of business miles, which I'm no longer doing and ended up buying the vRS outright. Average since I've had it has been 32mpg - so its costing barely any more in fuel than my old modern diesel engine!
