Clutch and dual mass flywheel replacement - Cost/Quotes

Recommended Posts

Thanks again for the input from a supplier point of view.

Do you happen to know if the LUK and Sachs parts are rated the same?

I must also apologise for not considering you to do this as you are closer to me than unit 18. My Mrs lives in Sheffield so the only downside to you doing the job would have been having to see the mother on law... lol

No, the LuK is much weaker from our experience, hence why we only fit Sachs to this model.

It's no problem, we are pretty busy with the new Unit build anyway so only doing the odd workshop job until we are open from there.

Being busy is not an excuse for inflated prices. We are usually booked up for 2 - 3 months but our prices remain the same regardless. If people can't wait it is unfortunate, but they should not be stung.

Car has had a shark map on almost since I had it :-)

Problem is, underated parts don't normally fail gradually from my experience at work, they normal fail catastrophically without much notice! Lol

I'll have a chat with unit 18, Ali seems a sound bloke from what dealings I've had with him so far.

Jon have you been running your clutch and map since we met up and you bought the R32 steering wheel off me?

i have indeed been running the clutch and map since then and there has been zero problems, never feel the clutch slipping at all.

I cant remember the figures but the LUK stuff he fitted to mine was rated for more than my map anyway, i will dig out my paperwork

Both Sachs and LuK do not give any ratings for their OEM Products.

I thought that might be the case, I've been looking for months to try and find something. You'd think there would be a datasheet wouldn't you?!

Aware of the discount codes. There was one the other day for 30% off. Only reservation I have is, if something goes wrong with supplied parts, you can end up getting stung for an hourly rate whilst you car sits on a ramp. I've still found numerous mixed reviews on LUK and Sachs kit on seat and volkswagen forums.

I take everything on board that Darkside and everyone else has said but I am working on the premise that 3 totally separate garages wouldn't be fitting the same parts if they were no good. I'm getting mine fitted on June 11th so I'll post back the following week once I've torn it all apart lol.

Just to add, it is a Sachs kit which has been fitted to mine by unit 18 along with a new csc.

Unfortunately one thing Unit 18 brought to my attention was a excessive play in the gear box input shaft (lateral in and out play not radial). From the sound of it this is just something that can occur with age/mileage and there were two other fabias in having remedial work done for the same problem.

Please can I ask what others experience has been if they have experienced a similar issue? Unit 18 said they send the boxes off to be machined and modified as the bush which wears doesn't sound like it is an easily serviceable part. Once it has been modes, it shouldn't ever need doing again.

Just to make it clear, if what I'm saying doesn't sound right, it will be because I'm regurgitating it incorrectly, not because unit 18 told me wrong.

this is the problem you are mentioning almost all 02m gearboxes suffer with higher mileage

quick and easy fix using genuine parts solves the issue

thankfully the Fabia gearbox can fixed in situ, if you have an early golf/A3 02m gearbox is a removal and machine job

This is good news if it is the case. I was advised mine would need machining. Would you be able to advise how I would establish if my gearbox is compatible with this mod? Is the gearbox code stamped somewhere on the casing?

Thanks very much for the steer as well!

Did you see a red fabia with the top of the engine in bits? thats my mrs lol

Hows the new clutch feeling? dunno about your gear box matey but they are probably right

I did see the red fabia outside mate but the bonnet was shut. What is it in for?

Clutch and flywheel have transformed the car, don't think I quite realised how goosed they were. Ali said the clutch was shot and although the flywheel wasn't mega bad he said he wouldn't have put it back in with a new clutch.

Its in because the engine shakes violently on idle, cant work out what it is atm.

I agree, when they fitted the new clutch to mine it was like a new car

It's quite funny really, no matter what goes wrong with my Fabia it never crosses my mind to get rid of it and get something newer, I always want to get it sorted. I actually think I'll shed a tear when I finally do have to get rid lol

Do you know if the tricked up Mk1 escort is someone's that works at unit 18? (Assuming you've seen it that is). It an absolutely stunning car.

Another very happy Unit 18 customer. Had my clutch done by them last year. Nice well laid out place ,and almost similar in tidiness and cleanliness to some BMW main dealers I've visited as a comms service engineer.

So I'm going to have a look at the mod silky has mentioned, thought it worth a look for a grand total of £10 as opposed to a bill of £475.

Nothing ventured nothing gained.
