  1. One thing to check is outer of cable, where it is secured to suspension arm. Look for rust near the clip, as this can result in inner cable seizing. Remove drums and apply handbrake. Both sets of shoes should move. If not then suspect cables, and replace both as the original will have stretched. I found its a lot easier to change both at same time, to allow for easier equal cable tightening. And when inside drum, replace the adjusters/retaining kit and sliders.
  2. Strange how the member evades rules of conduct, then rushes to use same rules months later to support his biased views . You EITHER abide by rules, or???
  3. Pavement parking. A double-edged sword. I live in a narrow road and am disabled, so in a normal width road, I'd be entitled to a disabled space. But my road (, according to county) is too narrow for a disabled space. We've asked county councillor to see what can be done. Ideal solution would be to reduce pavement width and have a one way system adopted. But county have no funds for this, and central Govt wont help. So it appears that if you live in a road where you're all homeowners, help is there. Live in a road where its narrow and partially owned, Rishi & mates say, stuff you.
  4. Ive got cross JRT/Cairn that hates rats/cats and any furry. Her favourite game is hunting rats in monkey puzzle trees /tree stumps or drains. To date her biggest prize was a 12 inch rat ,which she took into the back garden to bury. Ever seen a Cairn with a mouse/rat/squirely ? One minute you've got a live furry, next it's flying through the air. Add JRT to mixture and its by by anything to do not like.
  5. dISCUSSION, NOT WHAT WE MODERATES SAW during brexit. We got STAY propaganda force fed. And that is why I say ban the politics from this forums, unless animal farm politics take over.
  6. Good call. perhaps NOW s time for a rethink on banned topics. Like Politics/ religion and perhaps football ( where as any Scot will know , a request as to team supported is really "what religion are you") . As a Scot ,my reply is "Partic Thistle" . Always stops the problem. Does one Skoda care what race/religion or politics another Skoda is, I doubt it. PERHAPS ,we need to think like the ECU inside the car .
  7. Aspman, being born in the Highlands, politics/religion and football are topics best left outside forums, as you and I know too well. Years ago I did some part-time taxi driving to earn a bit of extra cash. One night i picked up two blokes who , on hearing my accent asked which team I supported. My reply was Partick Thistle, which stopped in tracks and ended the conversation .As Taggart once said "there's murder committed every fortnight at Firtee.
  8. Something I do know about after 50+ years on A8x roads. On the likes of A830 , you need good instant braking , but on other roads you need instant breaking with the ability for a good long hard slow down form a bit of speed, with something left at the end, just in case.
  9. Thanks, choice between Bosch or Brembo. I changed over to Mintex pads last time, but pads are low and with discs getting a bit thin, thought it might be good time to do both, as I'm on 135k. Last mic on discs was a few years ago at 20.5 (Haynes / disc data says min 19mm) . The problem is that I can get at least 55k on a set of pads and at 5k a year that's a lot of time to remember.
  10. As said, DISCS. At MOT advice was to look at a change, and as its now pad time as well, thought it might be a good time to look, considering I now do 5k average. Looked at a few sites and new disc makes is not something I've wondered about. Present set up now seems to have an occasional bit of fade , so perhaps might be time for a better bit of metal. Any suggestions in the decent to good range,. I've spotted Brembos at what I consider a decent price , but to me a disc is a disc. Any help appreciated.
  11. From handbook, two sizes are quoted. I can't quite remember the alternative, but my 04 TDI was fitted with origonal makers boots when I got it as 185/60/14 . Few years ago , daughter scrapped a Laguna with 4 good 185/65/14 , and I got them sooner than me fitting news/worn at wrong time of year. Since then I've kept to that as it seems to handle better. Strangely my speedo is pretty muck ok, as checked on Sat nav. AP as said, I prefer ride and handling on 185/65/14.
  12. Mac- been there on WCML ,with hot dog vans a GOGO in Rugby. in the days in past times when paper headlines were "Network lost" or similar.
  13. BUT it does pay not to throw out those front car mats. I keep the old ones in boot, for when I get a bit of snow. Older blokes ( and BMW drivers, take head, BMW folks need string to tie to bumper ). As BMW drivers do not rate highly on my list of brain bots, I'll explain. Tie string to old mat, then tie to a bit of car. place in front of rear wheels, and drive of. Once you get somewhere, you can stop and drive off, retrieve mats and put in boot.
  14. Last night was Skate , part of the roker family, a flatfish of the family that saw off the Australian bloke. The poison sacks for the tail are held in glands inside the wings, and my dad always promised to show me how to cut a wing without puncturing the sack, but unfortunately never did. Another fact not known to the landlubber fishmongers( mainly at Morrisons) is that Skate matures with age. So once its past sell by date, the price drops drastically. Up north, ye old Highland gents used to hang skate etc on the washing line till it "cured". My old dog Lucky loved old skate and ( I suspect was part JRT) could be found with an old skate wing . So next time you see skate wings on the reduced isle, buy it, as you'll find its still nice.
  15. Lee- almost been there and got the T shirt. One day I put ladder up, and tied it , but didn't see dog poo under bottom of one leg. Got off pole, to ladder ,with belt on and ladder went squiffy. Sort of saved by belt as I still had one leg on step. BTW- you should never criticise the old leather belt with MK1 tetra, as done properly it was fall prevention before you fell.
  16. As J.R. says, I've never had a car with central locking. But hot water on windows does create problems on older locks. So I use WD40 Earlier in year to stop problems ( bit like Lee tieing lader to pole , before he went up it, rather than whinging after coming off).
  17. Unfortunately, locks in different parts of UK get colder/hotter depending on where you are/ live. I've lived in many parts of UK, over 50+ years of motoring, but the major factor is water vapour in locks. A hot key gets you in, but repelling moisture in lock works better. Graphite might work wonders, BUT after a few years water will get in and then its only a case of displacement.
  18. I'd refer the poster ( with tongue in cheek) to my bit in brackets " OTHER BRANDS ARE AVAILABLE" . TBH, in over 50 years, I've found WD40 adequate. Even to a frozen lock.
  19. I've always found that using the hand spray bottles of de icer is better than aerosol cans( I use Demon first thing). No arguements from SWMBO for leaving de icing stuff in house, after one year when we got iced out of car. And for the older Fabia owners, it might be a good time to treat seat belts to some Mr Sheen, before they suffer from damp . And again for those with aged MK1 Fabias and other makes of a geriatric nature, time to spray the front doorlocks with WD40 . I know its tempting to use hot water first thing, but a dollop of WD40 ( OTHER BRANDS ARE AVAILABLE) keeps water in the barrel etc at bay.
  20. South African mate told me he'd made a drier box( wooden frame with fine mesh screen on sides ( to keep out flies) and lets it "mellow" outside in the sun.
  21. Yep, I remember Braiis in Parts of Zimbabwe that still considered it part of Rhodesia( or a colony of RSA over the Limpopa), where a BRAII was a social event far removed from the OZ or Brit version. In those days I was stationed close to the limpopa river in Brietbridge with two native assistants, who were the best mates any rail tech could want. I did the callouts and they got the overtime . But at the weekend it was wood collection days. They only had fires to cook on, so Wednesday/Thursday and Friday it was wood collection days. Mpoanie wood in the bush , one load for the lads and a half load for my BBQ . That wood was that hard, that it weighed like bricks.
  22. Biltong. Anyone tried it? I got addicted in Southern Africa. In UK today its expensive, and an old South African mate told me how to make it. But, I;ve found a cheaper way for cheaper grade Bilton. Take one tray of Aldi sliced roast beef and leave in fridge to harden . Add spices/salt+ black pepper and it's ready.
  23. Perhaps I should rephrase my comment on banning and say "BAN ANY POST ENDING IN "EXIT". Since the referendum ( where many political biased organisations have tried to influence/ get changed by possibly illegal means), it still remains law. For those who dont like it, perhaps they might consider respecting the political views of other posters.
  24. CM- perhaps, now is the time to look at posting rules. I posted on one thread"perhaps ban political posts", to get one poster head down the "management" route that all posts could be political. I name no poster, as it's obvious. But I fail to see what the long running Brexit sore has got to do with cars.
