What else might cause these smoking symptoms?

It has been doing this for a little while, regardless of oil, but the issue has got real bad more recently and I do know that 5w 30 long life oil was used on the last change, but there are cars running on this, so worst thing it can have done is made the symptoms worse than running on my usual 5w 40.  I do have the elephant hose breather, but that is all clear too.

We will see what Wednesday brings.  I am currently running around in a Fiat Scudo which is pretty cool in a van sort of way :D

Do a compression test to rule that out.

Was just wondering as I had a similar thing with dssr 90s until I tweaked the timing maps.

  • personally i think its fueling related, or to be more exact, incomplete combustion of the fuel to an extent that raw diesel is entering the exhaust system, this is obvious because the smoke is white,

Do you have a breather system/catch can could be a blockage somewhere causing high crank case pressure, worth having a look, maybe vent to air just to rule it out and see if smoke levels improve.

Just noticed you had checked that, defo looks like over fueling on your vid

Unless your mechanic is telling porkies about compression test my moneys still on mapping ;)

Mapper has fitted same injectors to another engine and didn't white smoke or do what mine does even on factory map, let alone on map to suit the injectors. :)

so have you tried stock factory map on your car with the nozzles fitted?

and why are you using a thinner 5w30 oil on a tuned engine? you want a higher grade to be able to retain the viscosity at higher temps

if you car has always been on 5w40 your should at least try and retain this same grade of oil

personally i'd never run the thinner longlife oil in car that is tuned

if you are getting some sort of diesel leak into the cylinder or over fueling i'd expect the EGT's to have increased also

Sadly the thinner oil thing wasn't my call, but its happened but I do not believe has actually caused this issue, perhaps made it more obvious,

Injector unplugging and running on 3 this morning has proved inconclusive although it did seem less smoky with cylinders 3 and 4 disconnected (in turn) compared to 1 and 2.  However, it's been decided to get the head off and do a proper inspection.  Simply needs to be sorted.

Probably going to look out for a good low mileage engine as a donor.  But finding a low mileage pd130 will be a challenge.

Not so much, I'm not 100% sure but can you not get something like a BLX? Engine from a 2011 superb or similar?

I know some of the newer cars still come with the 1.9 pd engine.

2.0 16v time :)

2.0 16v is cheating IMO.

It's still an engine swap, why not go all out and join the 3.0 TDI boys.

Each to there own but changing engine takes away the fun of it. Jason is known for having one of the fastest Fabias, even my friends mention him time to time with regards to modifications etc. that will be done if you start swapping engines.

Then the hassle of changing logbooks etc and doing it legit.

Maybe a different cylinder head and getting bigger Pistons is acceptable :)

The 2 litre blocks are the same, but bigger bore means 2L displacement.  I did think about trying to get a 16V head put on my engine, but there is so much more work.  For a start. the inlet manifold is on the front of the head, not the back :D

He cheated anyway using an ASZ instead of the atd. :)

Going to say,  Seems like an age ago when I did that :D  2006!  :o   And there was a local DVLA office then to get the swap all OK'd by someone even though it looked identical to the old one :D

Eh? :D

Different head+ bigger Pistons = 2ltr 16v!!!!

Thought that was cheating.........

Granted, yes.

But it's then a bored out 1.9, not a factory 2.0

If it were to be bored, it would be to 2 litre measurements and using the 2 litre pistons on my original rods.

Well, found out what it was.  Cracked head!! :D

Well, found out what it was.  Cracked head!! :D

Cracked from valve seats to the hole where injectors pretrude out of head?

Presuming the crack has gone right upto the injector seat if it was allowing fuel in?

How many cylinders are cracked?
