Best oil for an oil change on the 1.2 TSI

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm having a six monthly oil change done in a couple of weeks. I'm sourcing all the parts inc. the oil.

Does anyone have any opinions on what oil I should go for. I know that Skoda recommends Castrol Edge Professional (which unlike normal Castrol Edge, is not easy to find). What's the thinking on normal Castrol Edge? I can get that in the correct 5w30 grade and VW spec very cheaply in Costco (IIRC it's about £25 for a 4 litre bottle). However, if anyone has any views or experience of other oil brands that play nice with the 1.2 TSI, your input would be most welcome.

Thanks

Chris

What I've used in the past Chris on my Skodas is Millers oils. Comes highly rated in the industry and is a great oil.

I would always use this over Castrol that the dealers use [emoji106]

Sorry can't give a link as I'm on mobile.

I'd be interested to know what the actual differences are between Castrol Edge Professional and Castrol Edge?

The Castrol "oil selector" recommends Edge 5W-30 for my 2013 1.2 TSi (105 BHP), based on variable servicing, but 0W-40 A3 / B4 based on yearly servicing intervals.

It's going for a main dealer / minor service in a few days and I'll report back what oil is used.

Chris - I noticed from your Fuelly link that you return considerably better fuel economy than I'm seeing, although I suspect it may relate to the number of miles covered (I see you've managed nearly 8K over the last 6 months, whereas I'm <4K). My average speed is 17-18 mph on trip 2 and the car is almost exclusively used for urban commuting. I imagine the 6 monthly oil changes may well offset the better fuel economy though

Main dealer will use either Castrol Edge Professional or Quantum - suspect they will use 5w40 if you are on the annual/10k service schedule, unless you tell them to use 5w30 long life.

I'm up to 45.2 average since I bought the car brand new 6 months ago. I passed the 4000 mile mark at the weekend

I have clocked up a fair bit of mileage since I got the Rapid, about 1,000 miles a month (which is about half what I was doing per month in my last car), though my mileage is still declining further.

My office is currently 33 miles away from home, with about a mile of local roads from my front door to the M4, then its M4a, M25 and M3 for about 31 miles, followed by less than a mile of local roads after I leave the M3 to get to my office car park. That bit slug of motorways is good for fuel consumption as I rarely hit traffic and average well over 50mph across the journey (I'm heading the opposite way to Rush Hour).

However, we are closing that office by the end of July, so come August I'll be working full time in Central London again, commuting on the Tube :( and mostly only driving at weekends and the odd evening trip to the tennis club. That should reduce my monthly mileage down to a few hundred miles at most, which will save a few quid on dinosaur juice - though I will miss the driving.
