Largest SD card for music with Columbus unit.

Featured Replies

Just had a play about with a small SD card and I'm wondering what is the largest/ optimum card I could use.

Also, can you search by artist or album?

32 GB is the largest it can take AFAIK - I'm running a card that size. Not sure about searching. I just leave it on random play all the time. I've got folders named from A to Z with bands put in there so I can find things pretty quickly by artist. I have a couple of favourite mp3s left in the root folder of the SD card to start the Columbus on. Once random play is selected from the root of the SD card it will choose files at random from everywhere on the card, then I skip anything I don't want to hear :).

make sure it a later firmware as earlier ones don't support larger sd cards.

Thanks. I've set up folders by band but only seem to mix by the band folder that I have opened. Maybe I need to do something to set up the root of the SD card ?

Try putting s single MP3 file in the root directory of the SD card.

Put a single mp3 (Or a few favourites that you want quick access to) in the root of the SD card, start playing one of these and while it's playing select the mix option. It will then pick at random (Though it's not that random based on certain songs always getting disproportionate play time) from everything on the card.

thanks, it's setting up the root file I'm struggling with. Are there a limited number of folders you can set up on the card?

Not as far as I know. I just have folders called 'A' through 'Z' with a couple of other categories in there are well. Things like GPS points of interest can go there too. There's no 'root' file, if you put the files directly on the SD card and not in a folder they're in the root directory of the SD card.

Thanks. I'm up to around 45 folders now without a problem.

I will try a few single MP3 files on without folders and see if when playing them it lets me do mix for the whole SD card. I was going to go Mdi but now think I will just stick with the SD card for my music. So far it looks a decent system

I have folders A to Z then in each folder sub-folders for each artist.

I then have a 5 second long silent MP3 in the root of the car.

You then have to select Mix from the little menu in order for it to shuffle the songs.

Thanks. Will give that a try this evening.

Added 2 tracks to the SD card and when I play one of these I can then do mix across the whole of the SD card. Problem sorted, thanks to everyone for their input. Think my iPod will be up for sale next as I only used it for in the car. Also saved me the cost of fitting an mdi unit too.
