My new OctyII. First thoughts

Featured Replies

Picked up my OctyII 2.0TDi Elegance at noon today. I've spent a limited amount of time driving the car since then thanks to MFI, my dentist and my 1 yr old son (long story). I've so far clocked up 72 miles.

For all those interested, these are my first impressions. i'm not bitching, just being honest.

Negative points:-

More engine noise, tyre noise and harder ride than my Megane.

The return button on the RH stalk for maxidot control is badly placed and difficult to operate without turning on the wipers

Positive Points:

Lots and lots and lots more power and torque than my Megane. Haven't pushed it too hard but this car really is a sheep in wolf's clothing and lots of fun.

Significantly better handling than my Megane

I like the facility for popping the boot via the remote.

General Comments:

I'm getting around 42 mpg with mainly town driving.

When you get into the car in darkness, it' like stepping into the starship enterprise.

I asked the dealer to ensure "daytime running headlights" were off in the VAG-COM settings prior to collection. Then discovered after leaving the dealers that the headlights remained on regardless of the lightswitch position except 'off' . I though stuff it, i'll go back some time. Filled up with diesel and what do you the lights are suddenly working correctly. Something to watch.

This car was very impressive. Quality wise it felt like I was sitting in Audi A3!

Are you sure thats what you meant? ;)

Sounds like the light sensor was telling the headlights it was dark, been very overcast here today, you?

I suppose i'm referring more to what people expect from looking at the badge than the actual performance. The fact it's got 75% more power than my last motor might have something to do with it too.

Regardless of what it says on paper though, i've driven a BMW 120d back to back with one of these and the BM isn't as good for 'in gear' acceleration. My boss's wife compared an A3 against a 120d and agrees. That can't be bad because the 120d is considered to be a fairly quick motor.

Give me a few weeks and the novelty will have worn off. Then the quest for power shall begin subject to sprog No.2 arriving in April not draining the finances too much. Can you see where this is going.

. Can you see where this is going.

Here ?

Now now, I actually meant 'no where' Octygone but your mind is working overtime. We think we'll settle for 2 sprogs especially if this next one is a girl. Girls are a nightmare but you all about that

so it's basically quicker than it looks...a wolf in sheeps clothing. the other way around would be, say, a 1.2 fabia made to look like a vRS :)

Did I actually say that! Christ I did. Laughs on me then I suppose but you know what I mean. I was knackered and shouldn't have been let loose on line. I can only imagine what I said to my lady friends. Knackered again now and going to bed soon.

Funny how since i've got this car i've done nothing but ferry family about (he says while trying to change the subject to hide his embarrassment). The first chance i'll get the car to myself will be the 3 mile run to work on Monday morning. Typical isn't it.

Starting to get a better idea of how the car performs today.

Took off at lights in the wet earlier and some little runt tried to cut in on me in a Ka. He caught me of guard and I was having none of it but not being familar with where the power is from the 2.0Tdi yet, he took a lead. I had made a balls of 1st gear and wasn't gaining any so went into 2nd and nailed it (just a little bit after all it's a new car with only a couple of hundred miles on it). Bloody hell, ESP kicked in, wheels went nuts and suddenly i'm catapulted 2 car lengths ahead of him. I'll have to watch out for that 2nd gear, could be nasty on a roundabout and why the hell did nobody tell me.

That's the beauty of ESP, at least it kept the car pointing the right way ;)

In 3rd you would have made even more of a cloud of dust to leave the Ka in :D
