What is this engine pipe please?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've introduced myself but this is my first proper post.

2003 Fabia 1.2 6V

My question is about the pipe running along the back of the engine bay. One end attaches to the throttle body. I assume it a a vacuum pipe, however the other end does not go directly to the brake servo. Not sure of the component that it connects to. It is shown in the attached picture and has two flexible connections that are covered in duct tape at the moment. What is this pipe for?

PCV system pipe. That's Positive Crankcase Ventilation.  The valve at the left hand end (in your picture) varies the size of an orifice which connects inlet manifold vacuum to the crankcase, to direct any blow-by gases back into the intake for emissions reasons. Here's a diagram of the system on the slightly more elaborate set up for the 12-valve 1.2 (ignore the reference to oil filter at the bottom, they mean air filter!):

There should be a VW-group part number on the existing flexible hoses to help with sourcing replacements, unless it is covered by the gaffer-tape patching.
