Please help! Weird noise when hitting 20 KPH

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I'm kinda new here so I hope there isn't a similar topic around.

I have a problem in my 2008 Fabia 1.6.

Its a little weird but here it is:

Every time I start the engine and starting to drive there is a single clunk noise exactly when hitting 20 KPH

(about 12MPH) and it never comes back again until the next ride.

I went to local Skoda dealership and let them here the sound, and they couldnt figure it out either.

So did  anyone had this/heard of this.

Thanks, Daniel

Welcome to the forum.

Could it be the doors locking when you reach that speed?

Hi George, No it's not door locking :-)

What area of the car do you think it is coming from, under the bonnet ?

Do you have 'Central Locking' on your car and do you have 'Automatic locking' which activates at 15 km/h?

You right, I should have written it :-) .

I do have central locking but not an automatic one when hitting certain speed, so its not that.

The noise seems to comes  from under the bonnet, and when it happens there is a small vibration on the gas pedal.

If I had to put my money on it, this will the ABS start up check. Although I haven't noticed it on my VRS, it used to be quite loud on my Corsa VXR. Always did it after start up when you hit around 10-15mph.

I'm not a mechanic though so only a guess!

Thanks for the comment! I looked for this issue online and it really seem right.

From your experience is this indicating that a further problem with the ABS can occur in the future?

Used to happen on a Ford Focus I had - some sort of self-diagnostic thing, I believe. Never turned into a problem, anyway.

No not at all - it's a good noise! The ABS system self checks every start up to make sure the system is working. If there was anything wrong you would get an abs warning light.

For all intensive purposes it's a reassuring thing it's doing it. Means everything is working as it should.
