Front passenger side moo/groan with slight left turn

Featured Replies

My Octavia I has had this issue for a while after getting the disks and pads re-done. When I am slightly turned to the left it makes a bit of a groaning/mooing noise constantly whilst driving.

Am I correct in assuming it's the bearing? I had the front RHS re done with the disks.

Sounds like bearing although turning right would load the o/s more to male it moan. Before you shell out I'd be tempted to go back to the garage and get them to double check their work as turning left is loading that side. There is a routine for loading the hub nut, they may not have done that properly. Can't remember the exact routine but it's done to a torque then backed off and torqued again etc.

Oops, to be clear, the sound comes from the left only.

If it is a hub bearing, you should be able to "play" with the noise, by that I mean if you turn right, the left wheel will be turning faster than the right so the mooing sound should increase speed. By the same action when you turn left, the noise should be slower, as the wheel does not turn as fast as the right.

If it were me, I would find a piece of quite road at a time when not much traffic is about, and steer right then left in a slow progressive weave to see what happens with the noise. The results of the test will either confirm or rule out hub bearings.

Oops, to be clear, the sound comes from the left only.

Exactly so if it's only from the left it should be worse when loading it to turn right following Phil's description above if it is wheel bearings. Be unusual for 2 to fail around the same time but not unheard of. Sometimes with resonance and such it's difficult to tell which side it's coming from, but if it is the front left bearing it should be worse when turning to the right.

Ah ok. I'll try and give it a go.

Thanks for the advice.

Ok, so it turns out that yes, putting weight on the right hand side causes the sound! It doesn't manifest at lower speeds, only higher ones.

I'll have to take it to my local mechanic as I got someone else to do that one. May as well get the turbo refurbed whilst I'm at it too.

I'll update when I know more. Thanks for the advice Yellow and Kent :)

another edit: I just remembered it was the CV, not the bearing. Pants. Will talk to my family mechanic :)

Bit old to edit, but just tying off loose ends on threads: Had the bearing replaced and it's absolutely fine now :)
