Funny smell not dpf eggy cokey smell? 1.6 tdi

Featured Replies

The fan coming on at 97*oC & above when sitting to get the coolant back down to the 90*oC temperature is how it should be.

Once you are running along at speed the coolant should be getting air cooled through the radiator,

coolant cooled to cool the oil which is a coolant.

My Tdi monte sits at 90c all day long, same as my vrs, gets to 90 and just sits there!

Id go for a failing theromostat.

You could also check the coolant temp with a thermometer or a laser heat gun. You need to determine if it is hot or just reading hot.

Just been sat in it like a nob staring at torque app sits at 97c goes upto 100 then down to 96 and starts rising again, still stays high when driving too 95ish

Off to check with a thermometer back in a bit!

Cant find a thermometer other than my fish tank one so i left that there, Didnt realise that i can quickly check if the thermostat is working by holding the in and out pipes on the rad to see if theyre hot the top one is very hot the bottom is cool think i should be looking at that, Thanks wakey

ill take it out and boil it in a pan tommorow see if it opens

The Thermostat is opening OK, if there is one.

If the Thermostat was not open, the Coolant could not be circulating.

You are just messing about and seem to be getting nowhere,

can you not just speak with a Mechanic about what your issues are.

What are your issues?

& what does the Coolant Temperature Gauge on the car show that normally indicates 90*oC as the Temp Fluctuates up and down a bit.

??

Where do you buy your diesel from?

Surely the coolant goes around the engine and coolant bottle pump and back again but only through the rad when the thermostat is open?

Until the engine reaches operating temperature the coolant circulates around the block, then once up to temperature a thermostat opens.

I thought your issue was a smell,

& you took the Tuning Box off and that went.

As to Coolant temp, and oil temp.

Do you know the Oil that is in the car, is it VW 505 or VW 507 ok.

Changed at Fixed Servicing, ?  & Recently?

I think im thinking too much lol yes the orignal problem i believe is solved but as my car has no temp guage on the dash ive noticed how high it is using torque app via obd what i havent realised is the temp on the app will be live temp whereas any car guage will be averaged out and wont jump up and down

Its had its first three dealer services fourth by me the oil was specific to the car cant remember the grade tho it was specific for vw only use esso derv,  coolant tester says its safe but like i said i think im thinking too much looking at live data as i dont have a guage theres no coolant light on either other than the cold one when first started

And it looks like the blower motor resisitor pack has gone too only now noticed works on 4 maybe that was the electric smell :dull:

Stick a fork in me im done :@

I was told they do run a bit hot anyway. I had a fan pack up and I drove for ages until I noticed as it didn't actually overheat unless it was quite warm weather and I was in stop start conditions. I had air con compressor cutting out to save killing it, lead to  the fault.
