Funny smell not dpf eggy cokey smell? 1.6 tdi

Featured Replies

My wifes just come home smelling like shes burnt her hair in a hair dryer smells coming from my monte not sure where from tho?

No fault codes exhaust isnt louder and smelly like dpf regen smells on any of my vans its like an electrical smell, So far checked a/c comp ok alternator charging at 13.9v has oil and coolant noticed on torque app that coolants at 97c which seems high also intake temp says 45c when its about 15c outside?

Any ideas whats up?

Not brakes or clutch then?

  • Author

No sorry did have a sniff around the brakes seems plenty of life in the clutch and shes pretty good not riding the clutch, plus i gave it a god thrash no slip and a long subtle drive trying to make it happen again

Also noticed the engine bay very warm even the support for the bonnet was very warm to touch checked the coolant is pumping also it is just a treacle on idle aslo tested it its within -25-29 range

Some Fabia / Montes required a wiring loom replacement in the engine compartment / Fan, so check with a Skoda Dealership.

Maybe thats it never noticed the fan running or not since ive had it, Does have full dealer service history would it have been done then?

Well it should have where there is a Service Campaign / TPI,.  but considering they actions of many staff, maybe not.

So call and check.

I can bump a thread if you can not search and find it.

Thanks im looking but cant see it a bump would be great thanks

Its likely she's been riding the clutch. It's quite common for women to do this as they are generally a bit rubbish when it comes to driving

Hahaha

You should she the kerbage shes capable of! shes done about 3k in it and only today she decided to fry my clutch or was it a progressive thing lol?

No the clutch should be OK but if she has over worked it, say by excessive revving and slipping the clutch whilst reversing or whatever then the clutch gets hot. The smell is awful - like rotting veg. It's very distinctive and like nothing else car related.

It should be OK, maybe a little juddery for a while. Take it for a good blast and it should be OK

Does she ride the clutch. Eg, edging at traffic lights and on hills, as appose to using the handbrake?

An eggy or sulphur smell can indicate a battery that is being overcharged.

Have a sniff round the battery and if it is coming from there get the battery and charging voltages checked.

Its definitely not the silly woman driver riding the clutch cant believe how patronising that sounds lol

Anyway the battery is charging at 13.9-14v and nit getting warm when checked coolant fan comes on at around 97c think it may have been a combination of and active dpf regen combined with a diesel tuning box adding too much fuel didn't sound or smell like any regen ive experienced on lgv's but ive lost about 1/8th of a tank and 10 mpg average. Did the same journey 30 mins each way without tuning box and no smell and around engine wasn't as hot to touch as before

Anyone fancy checking theyre coolant temperature should be around 90c iirc?

So says the temp gauges on nearly every car ive driven.

Bike is more specific and shows 75-85c under normal running.

Mines running at 97ish so somethings up there weren't sure if they run hotter deliberately to lower emissions or something like that and they dont have a gauge for that reason

Its running at 97c when running normally and haven't had the smell since

Probably so

Running leaner. Slightly more air in the air/fuel mixture to make it run cleaner on emmisions

Id imagine.

Your Coolant is too hot at 97*oC or it is indicating as hot.

The coolant is cooler normally because the coolant needs to get the Oil Temperature back down.

Normal Running should have the Coolant near 90*oC and the oil getting back to the low 90's.

Higher temps use more fuel because then the fan is needed to lower the Coolant to lower the Oil Temp.

What Tuning Box are you running,

and why if the Fuel Consumption is suffering.?

What age of car,

What Mileage of car, and has servicing been done, and is the Tuning Box the only mod done with the Engine.

Has the Coolant Ratio been checked if it is an older car?

EDIT.

I see Bluespark tuning box.

Speak to them about the issue you are having.

Ive removed the box as thats the easiest way to tell if its the cause and still have the same temp issue but havent had any other issue smelly thirsty etc It was flashing when it shouldnt be so im sure its caused the initial problem but looking for the fault ive noticed the coolant temp being high?

Its 61 monte 1.6 tdi 75 fsh 55k changed oil, filters etc about a month ago no other mods just upgraded hu lights etc. Ive tested the coolant its showing safe im getting the 97c coolant reading from torque app and obd doctor

Any ideas if the ecu gets it temp figure from the coolant temp sensor or is that just for the fan the fan comes on but only when its quite hot over 97c so it seems thats not working correctly, experienced a active regen earlier today high revs when stationary low exhaust note etc dpf smell but there was no fan running? theyre about a fiver off ebay and google say quite common on vag cars is it worth changing it?

Have you checked the Fuse for the Coolant Fan, 8 or 9.

& the Fan was part of the issue that had the cars requiring Warranty Work, and a loom replacement.

?

Have you enquired with Skoda UK or a Dealership.?

  • Author

I haven't checked them as the fan comes on just when it get too hot making me think the sensor was wrong, Dealers weren't too helpful tbh they did confirm the fsh tho

I'll check the fuses in a bit just incase

Sorry, missed that the fan was working.

?

Is the correct coolant in.? (pink)

  • Author

yep nice pink colour no brown'ness used coolant tester a five of the four discs floated, doesn't make sense why its running so high only thing I can muster up is sensor. Not sure if the ecu reads temp from same place as the fan there's no lights warning of a problem

97 degrees and fan coming on doesnt sound too bad to me?

Whay should it come on at George? Do we know?

Completely different but i can watch bike coolant temp gauge rise to 107c in traffic before fan kicks on and knocks it down to 96c
