Petrol Tank - Stays full for ages then drops like a stone?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Been noticing something not odd as such on my Monte. When I fill the tank up, the fuel gauge stays at full for for ages and ages, then when it starts to drop it seems like I can see it dropping as I drive.

It doesn't mean I use any more fuel of course, the MPGs are great on this car, I just wondered if it was designed like that and if anyone else has noticed?

Be cool to find out :)

Yep quite normal. In my experience it takes ages to get to 1/2 then drops like a stone.

I always fill up when it gets to a 1/4, I'm sure it's running on fumes by the time it gets to the red...

This is mentioned under thread Petrol just lower down in the Citigo section.

As above...I never let it get below quarter-full....never have done with any car that I've owned.

When it works like that, it's more accurate when tank almost empty. Most likely it's designed like that.

Perfectly normal that is.

Cowards! I've let my gauge read empty a few times and once had to do 30miles when the range said 0!

Not good at all for the fuel pump.

Maybe not but I'll not have the car past another year.

no issue - thats what a fuel filter is for.

this! We run our work vans from full to red light all the time, one is coming up 300k and never had fuel pump or the like issues.

I've owned a few cars now and taken plenty past 100k and a couple to 200k and touch wood never had to replace anything other than consumables. I always run my car into the red, why fill up with quarter of a tank left??

For the same reason we never empty the fridge or freezer before we buy more food...

Unless I'm going somewhere, I try to run around town on a qtr or less of fuel.

Granted I'm never more than 15miles from a petrol station. If I were in the wilds of scotland I'd make that 3/4qtrs with a 5l can in the boot.

Point being, why pay to cart 25kgs of fuel around urban areas, plus it effects the traffic light drag performance.

No, I'm not talking about dirt entering to fuel pump. It's not the issue, as you said filter do its job. Actually, fuel pump sucks always from the same level, no matter if tank is full or empty.

Fuel pump needs to be immersed in fuel all the time, because fuel works as coolant for the fuel pump. Fuel also lubricate the fuel pump.

That's why fuel gauge shows empty a lot before fuel tank is empty.
