Fault codes (DTC) 16955, 17978 and 00526

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my poorly Fabia. I got myself one of the simple plugin fault detectors (U281 >> http://www.amazon.co.uk/U281-OBD-2-CAN-BUS-SCANNER-SKODA/dp/B001C9V89A )

I'm putting the links in, just in case someone else has the same problem.

Two of the codes are quite easy, the brake lights are NOT WORKING....that covers 00526 ( http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00526 ) and 16955 (  http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16955/P0571/001393 )

17978 ( http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17978/P1570/005488 ) is a bit of a mystery...it's related to the immobiliser. Having had a good Google around I can see that people have experienced the car cutting out after a few seconds, and other stalling problems. I've not experienced any of the symptoms of cutting out etc. The engine seems to be running quite merrily.

Has anyone seen this before on a Fabia? Is there anything worth trying first? Perhaps disconnecting the battery.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Best wishes,

Mr DJP

You don't say which engine your Fabia is fitted with, however I would simply replace the brake light switch then clear all the codes and see if any come back.

I am wondering if it's all interrelated - the brakes are in a poor state, but that's a job for the garage. It's a 1.9 diesel.

Code 17978 is quite common and doesn't necessarily indicate anything to worry about if the car is running fine. I get the same code on mine every time I put the fault scanner on yet the car starts and runs perfectly.
