When my first rear door became reluctant to open, I took off the door card and sprayed lubricants over all moving parts around the lock area. I then exercised the lock a number of times and no more sticking. Over the next two or three years the the same problem occurred on the other rear door and the front passenger door but this time I sprayed lubricant through the small gaps around the lock on the outside door edge. I let the straw on the spray can go through the gap so that I could get to as many parts as possible. No need to take off the door card. Job done.

It won't work for all failures but if is is trying to move it probably will.

Worth a try.

They were in the region of 70 quid but that included delivery from the US to NZ.

I replaced all 4 of mine £23 pound each of ebay

That's good news....my wife's Octy is going for NCT next week and the central locking seems to believe its on work to rule, so randomly do the doors open. It used to be fun when the kids couldn't get out of the car but I guess its probably a bit dangerous as one of the rear windows has packed up too!

Check the wiring looms between pillars and doors they tend to snap and give intermittent signs of working.

if the cars in pretty shape other than the rear door give the car a wash and a clean / hoover out. And if they are a bit old change the drop links and arb bushes before you go in. Gives the car a looked after appearance and very common failure needing full retest is links and bushes... so if the are sorted youve a better passing chance. They need to be able to get im one rear door to check seat belt fastenings etc though so if your 2doors are iffy, get the car to open them before test and dont relock it...
