Intermittent engine cutting out

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

For around two years now my BMN powered vRS has switched itself off intermittently. While slowing to stop for traffic etc as I dip the clutch in second gear the engine will die and battery light come on. Occasionally this will happen at higher speed while braking for example at a motorway toll post, usually in this instance I just let the clutch out and the car will start again as moving. Usually after these symptoms the engine will go into a 'high idle' to regenerate. Car does mainly motorway / longer journeys. I have had the car Insepected by two reputable VAG independents and two Skoda main dealers and each time they comment that there are no fault codes, the dpf content is well within normal limits and that the car does not need any software updates. At this stage I'm perplexed, I think that the software is to blame as clearly the ECU is not ensuring that a higher idle rpm is selected when attempted to regenerate and when under braking this results in the car cutting out. Some have advised a DPF delete but the dpf isn't nearly full so how can I be guaranteed that this will sort the problem? I have owned the car since new and it has a full service history and been well cared for.

Any advice much appreciated!

Ive had a few of these things happen to me too, never have managed to get to the bottom of it (not that ive looked too hard) but heard it could be failing crank positioning sensor, like i say though, never followed it up so would be interested to see what comes of this thread

This happened to me for a period of over 6months, exact same symptoms as you describe but no fault codes.

One day my car started cutting out after like 10mins and would struggle to fire up - got a read out and it came back as crank position sensor ( CKP ).

Had that replaced and not one single problem since. I would highly recommend changing that sensor.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the info. I have never had any issues starting or re-starting after the car cuts out. I had a glow plug light flashing and no power when I accelerated on the motorway yesterday. Pulled over and all resolved. Had the car scanned and it is now showing a dpf reading of ?37 out of 40 and a hot pre catalyst. Sounds like dpf issues. Dilemma now regarding what to do I.e. Clean dpf, replace or gut and map out.
