My biggest fan - groan! Radiator fan advice please :D

Featured Replies

Mk. 1 VRS has never overheated, temp guage always sits at 90, even in traffic.

However, the other day, I had my aircon going, and got out of my car whilst leaving it idling, with the aircon on. I noticed (as others may appreciate - knowing every single sound their car makes like they would with a newborn child :) ) that the fan(s) were running as usual with the aircon switched on, however this time it was a bit quiter than normal?

So I popped the bonnet, and only the small fan was running. Now I might be dreaming it, but I seem to remember that with the aircon going, BOTH the large and small fans would be running, no?

But anyway, further to that - I switched off, grabbed the large fan, and it seems to be quite seized - i.e. it is quite difficult to turn by hand, compared to the small one which spins freely when I give it a flick.

I guess it is therefore ****ed. So two questions if you would be so kind as to help please! First - how do I test it? Can I pop the plug off the CTS and short the terminals or something? Or is there another way?

Second - if it is ****ed, best place to source a replacement please? Do TPS carry such a thing or is it an ebay / scrapper special for a used part?

As always, thanks so much in advance, my Czech - loving chums :D

Common problem I'm afraid, fan should spin quite easily, when flicked with your finger, but as you have found, they seize. Mine went last year, if you want to double check your wiring, there is a youtube vid that tells you how to short out the appropriate fan switch terminals in the rad switch, but to be honest, if it is stiff to turn, you already have your fault.

The screws that hold the fan cowl can be a bit of a pig if the torx heads are fubar, but the rest is straightforward once you have picked yourself up off the floor from the shock of the price. :giggle:

Sorry to hijack your thread. But I am facing the same issue. The only difference is-in my case, the larger fan spins freely, but doesn't work. Should I go in for the replacement of the fan?

If the fan spins freely then it may be the fan control circuit rather than the fan. This vid will tell you how to check the main circuit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af-jT9cAioM, but sometimes you can get problems with the loom connector by the starter as well.

Ok thanks chaps as always. Nope, as said, fan is very stiff so I am pretty sure it's fubar'd.

Any ideas on best place to source one and the cost?

Thanks :D

Have you tried in the for sale section on here?, last time I got a VAG price it was £170 + vat, so unless they have plummeted dramatically in the last 13 months, I would go for a good used unit.

Devonutopia usually has the equivalent of a spare car laying about in spares, :giggle: , send him a PM.

Seized fan came up as an advisory on the MOT. Left fan (large) is £45 from Euro Car Parts, right hand (small) is £51.

Thanks for the reply, but I am a complete noob when it comes to anything mechanical. Pls guide me on how to do this.

If you are fairly handy, all you need is about a foot of cable with a male spade terminal crimped to each end. You will be working in close proximity to a spinning fan, when you connect the test cable so it is IMPERATIVE that you keep the cable, and more importantly your fingers away from the blades.

Do as the chap has done on that you tube video and you should work out whether it is a fan, fan switch or control unit. Just spotted your location, the only proviso  to this is that Indian spec cars have the same climate control as UK cars, but I would have thought it would.

However, if you do not feel confident doing this, either get a knowledgeable mate or a pro to do it for you, as you cant buy new fingers if you get to close to the fan.

Good luck and just ask if you need more info.

Found the culprit. The fuse box located above the battery has one terminal burnt up, and the fuse box has turned white at one side. I suppose sorting this out will resolve the issue.
