Wheel Hub Corrosion

Featured Replies

I was surprised to see this level of hub corrosion on a 15 plate BMW i3. Is there anything unique about the i3 that would cause this?

Battery acid leaking?

Plenty of new Skodas with the same issue. An insufficient coating to the hub basically.

Saw quite a few at the National meet like this, including a 2 month old Mk3 vRS with the hubs looking like that i3! Yet some older Mk3s (1-2 years old) didn't have any corrosion to that area at all. So seems to be luck of the draw!

Bmw's are like that.

Rust in no time. Mines were 100% rusty before i painted them

My Toledo is just starting to turn rusty around the same area, less than 4k miles on the clock. They don't coat them very well, worse are Madza they don't coat much at all or it's very thinly applied.

A lot of top end BMW's have covers for the disc / hub to cover the unsightly rust...

The i3 can't be top-end enough :D

I must be a lucky one then :)

All that eco friendly don't waste paint nonsense. Get a can of hamerite and spray them black, piece of cake and well worth it.

Then you might as well do the calipers with what's left in the tin because there's plenty ;)

Bean-counters at work!

From experiencing SWMBOs BMW for the past few years I'd humbly suggest that BMW's build and materials quality is really nothing special.

What car is?

Everything is built to a budget nowadays.

I dont think any car is more reliable than the next. All about the profits

2010 116i

Ok bottom of the range but it was still sold to her like it was an M5. No issue with the dealer it was  decent deal she got.

It's just that the car hasn't really live up to the reputation of being a 'drivers car' or even a premium car.

The inside isn't really any better than an Octavia. The steering and other controls feel artificially heavy. Goes round corners ok but no real feel from the car.

Penny pinching on parts with reluctor rings located on non-serviceable parts.

Last service she was recommended £3500 of work on a 4yr old car with 33k.

Radio display gives up in warm weather as well. auto wipers are probably the worst I've ever used.

Clutch is odd and always jerks.

No feckin dipstick.

Jerky clutch is classic BMW

They fit a "clutch delay valve" absolutely horrendous, it can be removed to give you a bit of feel though.

I've had the rear reluctors away but replaced the reluctor rings myself (parts £12 per side) and a couple hours of work

Vagueness on the road will be due to those horrible runflat tyres. Likewise i've ditched these straight in the bin

All car hubs seem to do that now.

Bmw dont make the discs its the disc manuagcturer be it pagid / textar / ate / brembo

It's the hub/upright itself I was referring to.

That's why BMW put covers on.

I have yet to see a bmw myself with covers on, 3 in the family and no covers.. One being a relatively new 335d.

Maybe its an M3/4/5/6 thing

There is a 15 plate one of these close to where I work, I noticed as I walked past it had them on...

I think we've had this conversation before :p

She doesn't have runflats. 116i only comes with a can of goop So it actually rides pretty well.

Best beemer I ever drove was my Dad's old company car that was an E36 318i. Never driven one since that was as nice.

I don't think they've been as good since the E36, and the E39 5-Series. E46 M3 as an exception perhaps :)

An E39 540i tells you all about what's wrong with today's wheel sizes, tyre width and profile plus steering feel and feedback!
