Just ordered a Fabia SEL 1.2 (110) VW seems to have ditched this engine!

Sounds lovely

Enjoy (:

12500 is nout is it. You gonna try harder this time round? ;) haha.

Yeah, hopefully, went for the estate as my son is now into road cycling like me, we've just got him his first proper road bike so planning on going into Northumberland on weekends to cycle on the nice quiet country roads away from artics and buses.

Just need to get some roof bars to fit the cycle racks to then we're ready to go.

I've only got a 16 mile round trip to work 5 days a week so don't clock up too many, once September comes and said son goes to comprehensive then I'll be cycling more to work as no more school pick ups and drop offs so will probably cancel out the weekend miles.

I honestly dno how it works. I did just over 10k miles in my Mk2 last year, but i only use it at weekends. I barely use it in summer and put about 12k miles on the bike a year (only used in summer). It confuses me. Some people seem to he out in there cars all the time and do less miles than me lol. I guess i actually go places when i use my stuff though.

Hope all goes well with the cycling. Nice you can have a father son bond like that. Ive got a similar one with my dad but with motorbiking. It is nice having a shared interest, it really is.

He's over the moon I've got a Skoda estate now as they sponsor the Tour of Britain and the TDF, they use Suberb estates to transport the bikes and stuff, he thinks he's a budding Bradley Wiggins!!!

Ahaha. If he keeps at it, who knows, he could well be!! (:

The 1.2 TSI engine in your Rapid is the 8v unit which was in my Monte whereas the one in my Mk3 Fabia is the Euro 6 16v lump which is a lot smoother and should be more economical.

Yes I was referring to the age old lump. Hopefully the new 16V will prove itself to be more better economy wise.

Very early indications are positive, low 40's with only 30 miles on the clock on my commute with a little bit running around.

"You are right, they are short on the Octane rating on the pumps,

but supposedly they went 99 ron minimum when they added 'Nitro' to the name.

But i never darken their forecourts as their 'Secret Additives & Detergents' are not worth their rip off price."

At heart I am a self confessed "any big brand but Shell" - but I started using this UL+ stuff to try to clean out the engine a bit as it had been left to burn oil for a few years due to a faulty air/oil separator.

The improved drivability was an unexpected surprise!

What used to worry me a bit was the folk working, ie handling credit cards and the increased incidence of "skimming" of cards at Shell fuel outlets, that seems to have changed, well at the one I use!

Final reason for not buying Shell was the mess they made when they launched improved fuels back in 1980's that destroyed most of Fife Police small Vauxhalls - combination of engine design/operating conditions - something Shell seemed to have missed checking.

The comment "from a Shell related source" that the magic ingredient was common salt - well we all now know too much salt is bad for you, but it seems in more ways than one?

My typo with 'Greenergy' the Tesco Momentum producer.

Salt / Sodium.

but as i keep being told that is not common salt, but then not common.

but common to detergents / water wetters.

Nitro +

/ Nitogen / Oxygen / fresh air / not so fresh air.   Lots of Royal Dutch Shell PLC blowing hot air and smoke and mirrors.

Regularly getting close to 50 mpg in our Spaceback with the original 8v 1.2TSI (105PS), on 36 mile commuting runs to work. Only if I do an number of short local runs to town does the economy drop to the low 40's. This is on 95 octane with 11.7k covered to date since new.

Have also driven the Octavia III and Fabia III with the newer 16v 1.2 and 1.4TSI's in both Euro V and VI guise and personally I prefer the old 8v engine; feels a more willing motor to me anyway.

Believe the 1.2 will disappear in time completely, from what I read over the last year or so, which will be a shame. 3 cylinder motors are OK but a bit fizzy and not as balanced as a conventional 4 pot; about the only one I've ever liked is the old HTP.

Oh as a side note, after test driving a number of the new Fabia III and being chased by a couple of dealers trying to convince us to replace our Fabia II with one, we bought a very nice nearly new Volvo instead, with a Ford/PSA 1.6TDI    :D

TP

thing is a number of manufacturers are producing 3 cylinder 1.0ltr turbos in the 90-110ps area

they are great for "official fuel / emission figures" but real life they are worse than the traditional engines they are replacing

like all the small turbo engines you need to keep them in that magic area of around 2000-4500 rpm to maintain power and get the best economy from what I have been reading (estateman and gonoffski would be able to provide more info)

they are great for low tax etc but not sure how they will work and how realiability (as the are up in the area of over 100ps / ltr like the mkII vrs engine)

not sure I would like to be getting one this early on, as VAG tend to use early adopters as crash test dummies with little support when things go wrong

Couldn't agree more. I had a Ford Focus Zetec 1.0 (125bhp) and Ford combined figure was apparently 57mpg. Over 18,000 miles I never got above 42.

the fiat 500 twin air is supposed to give great mpg on the official test, but many are disappointed with real world

the main advantage of a small 1.2ltr and under turbo is unlike a normally aspirated engine you get a much flatter power curve compared to a NA engine which does make the car more drivable as you have much more power low down in the rev range, very similar to a diesel

Yeah, to an extent.

If youve ever driven a car with a large turbo, it goes much the other way haha. No power.. Little power.. Then you hit boost and off you go.

The 1.0 in the polo i drove certainly lacked power down in the rev range compared to the HTP. But it did love to be thrashed. Or maybe thats just cos it was a hire car.

So the car I am leaving to go for the Fabia 1.2 is a latest generation Suzuki Swift. It is incredibly well equipped, just built down to a price in terms of the interior. Hard, scratchy plastics everywhere, but well screwed together, nonetheless. The engine produces around about 95 bhp, but very high up the rev range, with little accompanying torque. To be honest, I am fed up of thrashing it to get anywhere near reasonable performance. That's probably the main reason I am going for the Fabia. Plus, I like the looks, much as I liked the art-deco style of the Mk1 (hated the Mk2, no style whatsoever) and the interior looks the part, even if it doesn't have the slush-moulded dash of VWs. Can't wait until it arrives!
