I think you will find that the 'tapping/clicking' are the worn Adjuster Screws & worn Adjuster Pins.

    A new camshaft and uprated tappets will stop it happening again. Just fitted some last week, they are known as black top tappets.

I cant believe the cam has no damage either but ive seen it and it looks spot on, im wondering id someone replaced the cam at some point to try and resolve the issue.

Bless, the only way to check a cam for wear is with a DTI, you may well have great eyesight Jon but I doubt even you can see 10 thou missing from the base circle  :p

I've rebuild / rebuilding one currently with a worn cam and tappets. Took a picture of the tappets since it had worn all the way through and worn almost the full cam lobe off!

Were you able to see the engine running before you started or did it arrive to you just as an engine?

I'm still keen to know more about the symptoms of this as I have a horrible feeling I may be suffering from it. However my symptoms (car shaking/roughish idle on occasion) are intermittent.

Yeah I seen it running, I drove it.

Had a misfire fault code it was that bad, so very shaky and rough on idle. Was one of the worst I've seen.

If your on your phone, turn the brightness up and zoom in on the left bucket, it's very very dented and has a hole in. Bucket 1, bucket 3 and bucket 8 were all dented, cracked and had holes in.

Camshaft is ruined, I'll get more pictures tomorrow now they are all removed.

God almighty, what the hell has caused that?! Or don't you know? Surely that just can't be classed as "wear and tear" lol

I forgot to get better pictures today but will get them tomorrow!

It's down to lack of oil changes and using cheap oil.

The best picture will be of the camshaft lobes, you'll love them!

This was mine was the worst one, had a big hairline crack init and worn, I never had any shakes tho, mine was just a rough start. Has a full skoda service history too.

I've always fitted the Darkside forged steel camshaft:

I know the one iipaul bought has just came back into stock and his was good as well as forged steel for almost 50% cheaper. This one:

Timing belt I always ask for dayco on my vag stuff

I'd go for the piper fast road cam, when my friend fitted one in his Octavia it was brilliant!

The lifters cost more than the cam though! :o so he fitted the black lifters that most people do, not the ones from piper.

Starting to think that the rough start I'm getting and rough idle could be camshaft wear, even though it looked in good condition when I took the cover off a couple days ago to adjust the injectors.

Might inspect it again tomorrow.

I think I'm going to check mine over the weekend. Slightly off topic but what do you personally use to seal the cam cover back on? Is it a gasket and also sealant?

No sealant at all, Just the rubber gasket.

I hate seeing the rocker covers plasterd with bathroom sealant to seal it... They are about a tena for a new one.

I believe that's the red sealant for the edges of the rocker.

I never have and never had a leak.

Not saying I know better, but I've never seen a gasket paste used on a new rocker cover before, even at the dealership and independent VAG specialists. I've seen people clag the full rubber gasket with silicone sealant and it's awful.

They don't advertise it for some reason, which I find a tad strange, so you have to call them about it for any info.

As a side note, I've also had my rocker cover off almost 10 times and never changed the gasket, it's never leaked, ever.

Keep me updated if you get a price and the spec of it, would be good to know but expect it to be silly money and give little gains on a diesel.

Last picture is of a good lobe left on the camshaft so you can see how badly worn the first picture one is.
