Featured Replies

daughter seen a car she likes but its from a garage and not a skoda approved.

Just wondering if anyone knows this car, any history you can give me?

Are these on chains or belts, could they have the same problem as VW polo if on chains?

Whats price should I be looking to pay if car is what it says it it

2011 1.2 tsi with 57k 2 owners seems first one skoda, not sure if ex demo or fleet.

has service but some skoda rest independent.

Daughter desperate would have it if got 3 threes, im just dubious of dealers lol normally hav too much to hide.

What do I need to look at for?

Car at a garage in Glasshoughton, wherever that is

Its a chain on that age 1.2 TSI.

What are you refering to when you say same problems as polo chains?

Some 1.2tsi's have had issues with the chains on start up but doesnt seem too common on here tbh. However it is the same unit thats in the polo.

Also some montes have been known to pull to the left, which can be troublesome to cure under warranty, but is sometimes covered up by different tyres.

How far from you is it?

I have no idea daughter said not to far but heard that one before will have to google it , I think she said 150mile but knowing her could be 250.

problems with polos is heard on some forums the chain just  stretched , or some broke but told its a non serviceable part, people who had fvwsh lost engine at 46k,

apparently read there was a problem with chains fitted around 2010/2011 and not everyone gets the so called death rattle, to warn them

Maybe worth ringing the dealer and having a straight talk with them, explain how it is.. "If its not right i wont be buying it anyway, so you might aswel tell me now and not waste my time". It sometimes works.

Ive not heard of anything like that on here tbh. Just rattles on start up. Do the polo forum folk say its a common problem? Or is it that you hear all the negative things on forums and much less positive sometimes.

The 1.2 tsi is a lovely engine to drive though tbh.

I think theres been a few cases of vw polo doesn't seem as active as this one, I thought vw solid reliable cars.

dealer told daughter chain quiet as a mouse, I just hate dealers with a passion.

so few for sale private, everyone must just be straight back to part ex car, told her probs more choice come September  but she thinks that's ages away,

Pardon the late reply but only just seen this.

Be wary about the cam chain - the problem is well known by VAG and not a rare issue. Just had the chain replaced on my wifes 2010 1.2TSI - Skoda UK paid the majority of the cost despite the car being 5 years old. Main dealer said they had replaced several when I took it in for inverstigation.  Car has only done 18K miles (hardly gets used).

Issue affects cars up to some time in late 2011.

The cam chain arrangement has been significantly revised at least twice over the years. The latest repair kit is on revision 2. Unfortunately I was told that some which had their chains replaced with the revision 1 kit have had their chains stretch for a second time.  With the latest kit they have to replace chain, guides, tensioner and both top and bottom sprockets. Not a trivial job.

Not trying to be a jeremiah but be careful. If there is even a slight noise from the chain I suggest you walk away.  BTW the noise is usually more noticeable if the car has been standing for a few hours before starting. On my wifes the chain made little noise once the engine was warm. You can only really be sure by measuring chain slack via the tensioner bolt hole - don't know how much a dealer would charge for doing that (I didn't have to pay for any investigation work as Skoda was coughing up).

Apart  from that its been a very good car and my wife is very satisfied with it.

So it be same problem in polo and fabia engines, so when is the safe period and what cars are on belts?

I hate to buy a car and the chain go, dealer said chain as quiet as mouse, but they ay anything

Same engine in Polo etc.

I believe all Mk2 fabias 1.2tsi will be chain but others on the forum will know better than me.

Not sure when in 2011 design was changed. Do a search on cam chain problems on this forum. There have been lots of posts on this issue in the past.

As you say don't rely on what an indy car seller tells you. I'm sure they won't be qualified to judge and anyway some chains have let go without any warning.

even the vw garage salesman said he hadn't heard of any problems, right bet he hadn't.

you would think they would do a recall, I know years ago jaguar had problem with timing chains and that was a big expense if the xk8 engine went,

So it be same problem in polo and fabia engines, so when is the safe period and what cars are on belts?

I think (not entirely sure) it was a chain through until this year... Maybe when when the 110ps 16v version came along.

But it is a big 'think'.

am I right in thinking its diesels that have belts then rather than chains

This will give you an idea of the different petrol engines in the

VW, Skoda, Seat & Audi models.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_petrol_engines

(there is a Wiki page for the Diesel Engines as well.)

EDIT,

I looked at the car on Autotrader now.

a 105 ps.  57,000 Miles ,  £6,000 asking Price.

Has a Service History it says. ('stamped',  does not mean last one done as per Service Schedule)

 '2 Previous Keepers',

First a Demonstrator / Pre Reg or what ever at a Skoda Dealer, then 1 more Keeper.

So who did the last 2 Services, are they Skoda Dealership Services

(see if there is an Invoice for the last Service with the car, otherwise you might want to get one done,

or check with who has Stamped the Service book.)

& what Warranty are you getting?
