Drivers say: 'I do it my way'

Featured Replies

orget the Highway Code! Thousands of busy drivers have adopted the 'My-Way Code' - and admit to breaking the law if it can save them a few minutes.

Nearly half of 2,500 car owners questioned said they would park on a double yellow line to post an urgent letter. And a quarter reckoned they would risk racing past a speed camera if they were late for a job interview.

Twenty-eight per cent claimed they'd drive on a nearly empty tank if they had a restaurant table booked and were behind schedule. And even the threat of damage doesn't put motorists off: 16 per cent said they'd risk harming their vehicles

over speed bumps if it meant making up time.

The survey, by oil giant Total, also revealed that a third of drivers would tailgate another car to stop other people getting in front of them, 17 per cent would race down a hard shoulder to avoid missing a flight and a quarter would park in a supermarket disabled bay when shopping.

Total's Stephanie Lumley said: "The survey was a look at how far UK drivers are willing to push the boundaries to save a few minutes. It does reflect a shift in how we live; longer working hours and hectic lifestyles mean our time is considered a valuable commodity."

So to summarise:

Three quarters of people wouldn't race past a speed camera if late for a job interview, 72% wouldn't drive on a nearly empty tank if they had a restaurant table booked, and 84% wouldn't risk harming their vehicles over speed bumps.

Two thirds of drivers wouldn't tailgate to stop someone getting in front, 83% wouldn't race down the hard shoulder to avoid missing a flight, three-quarters of people wouldn't park in a supermarket disable bay...

Or, in other words, yes, there are some c*cks on the road, but they're a minority! :D

Rob.

glass is always half full with you, isn't it Rob? :D

personally, i'd be more interested in the percentage of drivers who would consider infringing several laws (highway code and other laws) at the sme time and why....

Indeed.

Same can't be said of my fuel tank though...

yeah, sorry about that.

i was a bit short, and didn't think you'd mind so....... ;)

IMO it's partially in the reporting. I doubt that many would 'race' down the hard shoulder. Too many vigilante truckers would be willing to stick their wheels the wrong side of the rumbly line.

The speed camera thing is also bol*x IMO. If you know it's there, slow down for a few seconds and then speed up again.

No doubt about it though, certain aspects of modern life are cr*p!

Highway code isn't perfect (although I agree the above examples are bad)

I always pass in front of a car when turning right at traffic light junction. So do all the people coming the other way.

Code says try and pass 'offside to offside if possible'.

No one does that.Do they?

I really do hate people that do that! I see it a fair bit on the M6 just after the toll joins the M6, traffic is sometime bad there and people cant wait in traffic to get to the next junction.

Try driving in Italy :P - it's kinda the norm there when there is a lot of traffic about

Try driving here..it's even worse. Cutting in without signal, driving on the hard shoulder in heavy traffic...in fact, most of the time when I'm next to the hard shoulder and I see a smart ***, be him some big guy with a 3-digit plate or regular, I'll pull my car out a little less than half way into the shoulder so he can't pass, put my hand up and motion my finger a 'no' motion...what do they think they're better than everyone else?? ...

Yeah I used to see a bit of that, especially when there was an accident, people would use the hard shoulder to get off at the next exit, was great when that got jammed aswell, really helpfull for the emergency services

Each and everyone of them should of been shot dead imo.

Traffic light phasing doesn't help. There's a few sets of lights in Leicester that are on red in ALL directions at night. They only turn to green when a car has been stationary for 60 seconds or so. At 2am it's VERY tempting to slow right down, check it's safe to proceed and then just go!

aren't rules meant to be broken? If everyone always followed the rules we would have no fun in life.

Get a grip.

Get a grip.

Think you should take your own advice  I take it from your comment (and others you've made on the site) that you don't give a **** about others / rules etc - well fine, its your choice, but IMHO that make you one of those that cause half the problems in this country and I hope you get done at some point for it. Happy motoring :)

That particular rule would probably have been quite sensible when the Highway Code was first published (1931, IIRC) - the car you were meeting at the junction would probably be the only other car on that bit of road, so it would have made sense to pass each other in a way that ensured both cars were automatically on the correct side of the road when they left the junction.

These days of course, chances are that both cars turning right will have a small queue behind each of them, in which case it's just not possible to do it 'properly' without causing gridlock and/or an accident... Even in the middle of the night, when there might not be any queuing, people are so used to turning in front of each other these days that it's probably not a very good idea to follow the Highway Code at all in this instance...

Are you lot saying you don't stop on double yellows, drive on the hard shoulder or anything else? I must be alone then... ;)
