Chrome window trim

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Has anybody on here had this problem with the chrome window trim ? It seems to be getting worse on my car and it's starting to bug me now.

Yes, mine is just the same.

Have you tried a dedicated metal cleaner ?

Mine were like that at 7 months old. The dealer was aiming to change the rear window ones, but as I had already had trouble with creaks I didn't fancy them having to remove and rebond the whole window both sides. The trim is all in one with the glass on the estate.

It is water penetrating the laquer apparently, just like on the themisto wheels

Had some of this on my last Superb but it as it was only beginning to get noticeable towards the end of my ownership I didn't bother getting it sorted. Seems to be common enough though and I know a couple of owners who have also experienced it. One of them had the trim replaced (under warranty).

It has also been mentioned before on the threads here I think.

Yes, there have been complaints about this before.

My 2011 75,000 mile chrome trim is still as new.

When the car gets it's annual polish I do these bits of chrome too, I wonder if this has helped to repel the water?

I'd imagine these aggressive acidic cleaners that a lot of the drive-through / hand car washes use don't help either.

Mine are even worse with big patches of white. I have a 2012 combi. I have tried all sorts of cleaners and nothing seems to work. If anyone has had any success please post and let me know what they have used.

That's really poor.

Fortunately, on our 2011 car its all still like new too. Was wondering if they are lacquered, as others have said, perhaps the act of polishing has exacerbated the problem, where you've removed the lacquer in some areas and the water has got under the remaining lacquer? Doesn't help at all of course....

I have never taken my car through a car wash and only wash by hand with good quality products. The only polish I have ever applied is Autoglym resin which is not abrasive as far as I am aware.

It happened before I bought the car,( ex-demo) I have no idea what they cleaned it with. The strips were to be replaced under warranty but I decided to ignore for reasons given above.

I had mine replaced under warranty as they were like that when I picked it up (6 month old dealer manager's car). I've had no repeat of the issue and no problems with any form of water ingress either.

Once it appears then there is no getting rid of it, polishing or using cleaning materials won't help as the issue is as mentioned water ingress under the laquer.

Next time I'm in Cardiff I will pop into White Dove and show it to them and see what they have to say.
