QuickClear windscreen for non-Fords?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was (not) enjoying having to wait for the Fabia to warm up enough to get the window defrosted, considering it was only 3 degrees C, so hardly 'properly cold'.

Now IIRC Ford does the QuickClear screens that are pretty much like a rear window heater only for the windscreen instead.

Out of interest, other than buying a Ford, is this type of product for sale, and if so, how much would it cost, roughly?

I think Quickclear is one of the only bits of my old Focus I actually miss :(

Don't know if this sort of system can be retrofitted, as the system consists of many smaller heating elements built into the glass, so they are harder to see than the rear screen elements (for obvious reasons)

Would be interested to hear of a system though, if it possible and not too expensive. I'm not counting on it though.

Steve

I have heard of cautionary tales though with cracked windscreens and Fords. Great system apparently but screens can be

Only thing I found with the quick clear screen is that the heating elements were visible and compromised the clarity of the screen a little at night. The wires set up patterns away from oncoming headlamps and street lights. You get used to it, but I only realised how much difference it made when I got the Fabia. Only used it twice in 14 months anyway, but useful for getting the frost off. Personally I just tip a jug of lukewarm water down the screen in the morning to clear frost.

I can't imagine such a system being available as an aftermarket thing unless you were upgrading a lower spec of a model which has the heated screen somewhere in the range...

I find popping the air con on helps clear in a matter of seconds.

Heated screen would be nice though :(

Buy a Mini instead :D.... wife loves the quick-clear on hers.

RBW.

Aircon won't work if the temperatures get low + I've got that turned on anyway. Still took about 4 minutes to clear :(

I've found a company that sells these, but they only sell the windscreen, not the electrical gear required to actually connect/use it.

Will try to work out what can be done. The cost was about 180 quid, probably excl VAT though, so will work out at around 250

Hi,

Can you let me know where you can get these from?

I had one a few years back retro fitted to an old air cooled beetle (heating systems were real bad in these !!), it worked well but as has been mentioned there are a few drawbacks.

Firstly the connectors are sometimes put in a real daft place so hard to hide, next the insurance will not cover these, as this is a retro fit and does not come as an available option so it could work out costly if it gets damaged. Also you have to be careful that it matches any tinting you have already.

Overall they are good and do work, great to have in the winter.

Don't know how much they have changed(from my 1992 escort) but they used to send me cross eyed.Honestly.Very annoying

Not seen a '92 Escort to compare but mine are pretty much invisible unless you look really closely at the screen. Certainly not found any problems driving at night with them :D

I've driven a few Fords with them in and you can see it for sure, but it didn't bother me much.

Will try to keep you posted, in the meantime, here's the response I got:

I think Tweeks sell them.

Loads of people fit them on thier rally cars.

Tried a search on Demon Tweeks (guessing that's the one?), no luck :(

Just been told it will require some relays from say a Ford Focus or Mondeo.

Any recommended places to get cheap stuff from, would a scrappy work for those parts for example or are those heated screens a recent addition?

Apparently the heated windscreen ones from the company I spoke to are mainly used for rally purposes, and can be left on permanently without causing damage.

Got a call back from them today to make sure I got the email, so definitely seemed very friendly :)

Try www.fordpartsuk.com - always got a big  from me when I was getting parts for my Focus - genuine parts, discount, and fast service.

Steve

The heated front screen is the only thing that I miss from my Fiesta - it came in very useful at times especially during times of hard frost

Hi Gizmo68 :)

Yeah it was Ricky that called me yesterday, didnt mention a fitting service unfortunately.

From what he was saying basically there are two circuits, one to the left, one to the right, of(f) the screen. So you'd need (ideally) two relays + fuse each for the feeds, and then drive those relays from a single switch I suppose.

Thanks Steve as well, will have a look :)

I'll happily scan the relevant pages from Haynes if you want to see how Ford do it :D Only other thing you might want in the circuit is some form of timer to prevent the heater running for too long.

And no, you can't have my relays :P:rofl:
