Tyre choices

Time to get a new set of front tyres for my vRS, at 19k miles I'm not quite on the wear marker but it's near enough and with winter coming...

Anyway, I've done a bit of a search and seen various recommendations (Goodyear Eagle, Pirelli P Zero, Bridgestone S02, Kumho etc).

I don't want to spend a fortune *ahem* but for me the most important two factors are quietness and wet grip. Kumho seems good value but are they any good on those factors?

Also was looking at blackcircles.com as they seem to offer an price inclusive of fitting at my home which would be great as I don't have contacts to fit them for me (and saves me a trip out). Are they ok?

Cheers in advance. Hoping to get them done this coming week.

I have always go for the Eagle F1 GSD3's now the level of grip in the wet or dry seems to be very good.

The grip level in snow is however very very poor!

Lasted longer on the leon than the bridgestone RE040 things did, the bridgestones really were poor tyres!

I'm going for some Eagle F1s next time. Would also consider some Kumho Ecstas, Avon ZZ3s and Uniroyal Rainsports.

There are also tyre fitting agents available on MyTyres. Often the tyre prices are cheaper than BlackCircles. What I'd do is get the number of your nearest fitter and check what he'll charge. Then work out the total cost from there :)

In my experience, Continental Contisport contact 2's are very good, but they let go suddenly on the limit. I have Pirelli P6000's on at the moment - these are far more 'forgiving' and tend to have a smoother transision from full grip to no grip, giving you a bit of warning. I've tried niether in snow - I switch to Michelins on 14" steels in winter!

Pirelli P Zero's are phenomenal!!!

They are excellent in both wet and dry. Especially in the wet, I will not try another tyre, because I don't believe there's a better one out there for the price!

There not wearing to bad either, 10,000 miles and not too much sign of wear!

I'm quite impressed with the toyo proxes t1r I have at the moment. Not sure how long they'll last though as they're a softish tyre, but really good drip in the dry (like most tyres) and also rather good in the wet. Although I haven't pushed hard in the wet to find out their braking point. Had a bad experience last time I overcooked it

Would argee with you there, my X-Type had P Zero's on, one of the best tyres I've ever had on a car.

Amazed that you havn't got much wear after 10k, I used to get through a pair on the front evey 10k on the Jag  and I wouldn't say I often cornered like I was on the track in it either !!!!

I dont rate Pirelli P6000's at all they wear quicker than the F1's and provide a whole lot less grip!

Micheldever Tyres in Hampshire and Bracknell Tyres in er Bracknell both sell GSD3's cheaper than alot of the online retailers and their price includes fitting!

Well, unexpectedly there was a tyre centre open in town today when I went shopping and they've done me a great deal on some Pirelli P Zeros -

Am i right in saying the tyres fitted as standard are 'W' rated?

Have had faster cars with 'V'' rated so why is this, a new thing?

Or am i getting mixed up?

The Pirellis in the thread are they 'w' rated? As I heard you have fit the same rated tyres or can have insurance problems if you have a bump?

sorry so many ???

Another vote for T1-R's

Standard fit is W, which is as you say what the Pirellis are. I would only expect any insurance problems if a lower-spec tyre were fitted.
