Octavia FSI 1.6 mis-firing badly

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a 2005 plate Octavia FSI 1.6. Got it at 20K 3 years ago; now 40K .FSH. Has run fine till about 3 months ago then noticed occasional hesitation which has become more frequent mis-firing. Worst when you change down to 3rd/4th to accelerate or pull uphill. Yesterday I had to do about 20mls on minor roads doing around 20- 40 mph and more frequent gear changing -it was awful. Today 190mls nearly all Motorway at 60 - 80mph and hardly missed a beat. Puzzling. Forums on here and Audi A2 suggest a number of possibilities but plugs/coils seems to be place to start. Am I heading in the right direction? Some frightening stories of false diagnosis and high bills.

How difficult is changing plugs/coils? Used to do quite a bit with my Dad back in the 70's but then it was cleaning the distributor cap and rotor arm and changing plugs was a dawdle! Happy days!

any help appreciated,

Andy

I had a problem with a Golf 1.6 FSI. It was misfiring. A common fault on them engines is the coil packs, pull each one out while the engine is running and see if they pop. The ones that dont are your faulty ones.

Just pull the engine cover off and coil packs are right there. Easy enough to pull out.

Its also worth checking your spark plugs while your at it. Just pull the coil pack fully out and you got access to your spark plugs.

Fairly easy job mate

Hesitation under load could be due to a blocked fuel filter.

Had the same on my 1.6FSI Months ago turned out to be #1 Coil Pack.

Replaced it and Spark plug and all is fine.

Thanks folks. Skodacarman - that was my thought so fuel filter was replaced last week - no change.

Sulayman95/ jong123 - I'll check coils as you suggest and replace together with spark plug at same time. Some posts suggest you should replace in pairs i.e 1 and 3 and/or 2 and 4 depending on which are faulty. Suggestion is only replacing one can cause other to fail. Any thoughts / experience?

thanks.

Yeah thats true that. I changed 3 and 4 and then 2 failed. I also read that after I had changed them lol.

No Failure so far, but I am aware it could be a future problem so I carry a spare plug and coil.

I'm experiencing some of the problems you have mentioned. I'm wondering if it could be the EGR valve. There are quite expensive so I'm going to first try cleaning mine. Have you thought about this valve? Wouldn't describe the misfiring but the sluggishness and bad performance when accelerating.
