Rapid Spaceback owner with questions

Featured Replies

Hi all.

On the 1st March we picked up our first ever brand new car. The full name and model is a bit of a mouthful!

Rapid Spaceback SE Sport 1.2TSi (105ps) Greentech

It's in Race Blue which we both love. Was pretty standard apart from a few little things, third rear headrest, auto light and dimming pack, 5 year warranty and Lifeshine (which I've since regretted).

Excuse the cleanliness of the interior. The seat cover goes in when the dog goes in :)

Absolutely love it so far. Performance of the 105ps 1.2TSi is good, even on the motorway it more than keeps up. Motorway MPG is good, but I must say I'm a little dissapointed with the MPG around time. Skoda claim the Greentech should reach 45mpg which we all know is rubbish, but I would expect around 40. It started very low around 34mpg, but now we're up to 2500 miles driven, it's increased to around 37 around town.

We don't do a hell of a lot of miles, and it's all around town hence the petrol with greentech (which also brings tax down to £30/year).

Managed to get a couple of freebies from the dealer, including the floor mats and a rear bumper protector sticker (buggy in and out could eventually mark bumper). They failed miserably at fitting this at the dealer, ended up having to get a third party in to fit, which must of cost them a fair whack.

The reason we went for the Rapid over any other cars is our child seat is enourmous, it's rearward facing with tilt mode and ISOFIX base. In my cars we tested it in, the passenger seat in front of the seat would have to be so far forward but not in the Rapid. The front seat can be at least 50% of the way back meaning much more legroom and comfort.

Also our little boy loves the panoramic roof, plane spotting as we're driving.

Things don't love so much:

When using the navigation, the audio volume doesn't reduce when directions are being read out which is infuriating

One touch window down works on drivers side, but not up

When you switch off the car, there isn't a couple of seconds to roll up windows, so you have to put keys back in to put windows up

Can any of the above be changed with VCDS? I have one as my other car is a 2004 Audi S4 Avant which I've had a few bits changed like locking beep.

When I explain to people we bought a Skoda, they laugh until the see it!

Good looking car - welcome to the Spaceback family.

The 1.2TSI is easily capable of achieving in excess of 45mph with a mix of motorway driving. This will nosedive quickly if you are mostly doing local driving, though as you have start/stop that will help a bit.

Nav volume for directions - I don't have built-in nav so will need to defer to someone else on that.

The Spaceback only supports one-touch down, and only on the drivers door. It does not support one-touch up on any door, including the drivers door.

Window control after switch-off - sadly, this is another feature that was left off the Spaceback. As soon as the ignition is turned off, all power to the windows is cut.

Neither of the above window items can be changed with VCDS or anything else - the capability simply isn't there to be turned on.

My nav goes quieter for readouts, as it does when you hit reverse for the parking sensors.... maybe you just need to tweak the volumes in the settings?

You can tweak the volume of the navigation commands in settings, but not the audio volume.

So you can set the navigations commands really loud, but it just plays over the radio for example.

Shame about the windows though :(

Excuse me if i'm missing something here? But my Rapid Sport is the same 1.2 TSI Engine is it not? Or have they tweeked them for more efficiency and lower tax? I pay £110 for the year and not £30.

The Greentech is the same engine, but has start/stop and energy-saving tyres, which reduces the overall running emissions and helps it qualify for lower road tax.

Yup, as above. GreenTech has start/stop, briging tax bracket down.

Fair enough! But with regards to the mpg, in my Rapid Sport, which doesn't have start/stop and should be less economical I rarely ever see below 45mpg on the display. 45 should be quite easy to achieve in these cars.

I see 40-45 mixed, but as low as 35-38 in town, which was advertised by Skoda as 45. Mixed was advertised as 50 upwards. Although I knew the figures wouldn't be that high, I'd expect 40 around town.

Still love it though apart from the niggles.

Forgot to mention I got first three services for £99 which was a bargain.

Best looking Spaceback ever (sorry Plumber).

It actually looks expensive - debadged, people may not guess it's a Skoda

Spec seems almost identical to the Toledo SE Nav, but yours has sports seats which we can't get :(

Both have stop-start and cheap tax

MPG from the 1.2TSI when driving in town is really poor IMHO. However, your car is new, once it has run in and had its first service, you'll see a noticeable improvement in MPG overall. The motorway MPG is always pretty good if you drive with a delicate foot (you can drive fast - the engine is quite happy bombing along at 70mph or more, but avoid heavy-footed rapid acceleration as that is what kills the MPG on the motorway).

Thanks,

A few people have commented on the looks, the colour really suits it as it goes well with the black roof and mirrors. I must admit I did feel a bit smug at the dealers when I saw the colour combo for the first time when I collected it!

It depends where you go.  1 motorway commuter on here gets 55+ out of each tank.  I used to get 49 on A road commutes, but if you stop at junctions and use the gears it plummets. The 1.2 TSi is difficult to squeeze the miles out of - it's very dependent on roads and driving style. That said it does loosen up with age and it will improve.

For the OP your wide tyres are cancelling out the Greentech on the mpg front.  I reckon stop-start gains about 6% in mixed motoring but 215 tyres lose about 3 mpg.

Oh and read up on the conditions that disable the stop start!  My didn't function for 5 months because of my A/C settings!!

I forgot. Aircon costs about 3 mpg.

In my experience with this motor then:

Aircon      = -3

215 tyres =  -3

Not understanding the stop - start = -3

So I was about 9-10 mpg down on claimed figures to start with.

In addition incorrect tyre pressures (too low) cost a lot more.

And wintertime temperatures = -5mpg (compared with summer)

Factory figure is about 56.  I was getting at best 49 in summer / 44 winter.

I noticed about how the start/stop doesn't kick in at all when the A/C or heaters are on. Also seems to work less often when the lights are on.

I'm not too fussed. The wife pays for the petrol for this motor, me the other one!

Has anyone noticed how the bluetooth doesn't automatically connect on an Android device?

My iPhone connects automatically if I get in with the BT on. Wifes Galaxy S5, she has to connect manually each time even though it's setup to auto sync.

Life is punishing your wife for buying Android :)

I'm an A road commuter like yourself! Nice steady 50mph all the way to work the car seems to like this and so does the fuel gauge! Town driving isn't the best like chrisgreen posted above! I barely reach 35 on a Saturday going out and about town trip

Yes as others have said a very nice looking motor; looked at a used Elegance TDI in race blue before deciding to get the showroom TSI green machine instead for similar money. The Spaceback wears both colours really well but obviously the Rallye Green is not everyone's cup of tea. Seen a couple of green Spaceback Sports on forecourts recently but non on the road.

Think someone suggested the window function has been brought up to more modern standards on the MY16 but not seen one as yet.

It's the windscreen setting on the A/C.  If you have the air directed elsewhere, i.e. not demist, the stopstart works if the temperature isn't set too low etc etc.

There is a list of items affecting stopstart in the manual (Skoda, not SEAT)

My Samsung connects automatically too, must be a setting issue.

My LG G2 connects automatically as does my wife's Windows phone...

Oh just realised from your photo's your motor has the Fabia III armrest, rather than the revamped Golf IV set-up that Skoda have been using for years and as fitted in our MY14 model.

My stop/start works when the climate is in auto mode, try that if you have it, as said tends not to work (in winter) with A/C set to windscreen, not tried in that mode summer.

The BT may only work on one phone (connect automatically)  because it will only remember the phone that has been pared originally. My Amundsen will only do this, can't connect up more than one phone at a time either. To connect another (with mine)  you have to remove the original and then connect the additional/other phone.

Why have you regreted having the lifeshine?  I am askong because my last Skoda (fabia) had diamondbrite on it and I regreted that too#

Lifeshine is an autoglym product?

Lifeshine is not very good and is hideously overpriced for what it is (unlike most other AG products, which are good). Unless the dealer did it for free, it was money wasted. Same applies to Gard-X, Supagard and all the other dealer-sold paint protections.

Far better results can be achieved for less money by taking the car to a pro detailer for a new car protection detail.

As above really, after reading up what it actually was I regretted the purchase.

One thing that did interest me was the lifetime guarentee on the interior. Supposedly, any staining I should be able to claim under the guarentee and with a one year old and a dog, not a bad thing.

I've since given the outside a clay and a coat of Poorboys EX-P sealent. Nice beading :)
