Scratch advise please

Featured Replies

long story short: bird do do on me car at work, window and the shiny black strip inbetween windows, so i jump out lorry and clean it off with lorry window cleaner and an old rag. (I no!) carry on out gate etc etc. Finish work and aproaching car i notice the damn dreaded swirls scratches on the black shiny bit between windows. Sure enough its scratched, must of been dust on the damn thing or the cloth.

Now, they are fine scratches, but i cannot focus on anything else now everytime i look at the car! I promised myself this would be my 1st swirl free car.

Can i get them out myself with a product? Can this shiny black material be machine polised?

Any recomendations please. Would AG srp work?

Thanks.

It's quite soft plastic and polishes out very easily

SRP may work but a dedicated polish and s light pad will work better

Have you any experience of polishing by hand or with a machine?

It's not plastic on the Octy Chris, it's black paint.  That bit is known for it, they seem to be a factory fitted compulsory option (the swirls).  The paint must be soft and something about it's colour or angle means the swirls show.   A fine polish ought to get them out, srp is a good place to start.  They will be back soon though.

Hi Chris, thanks.

Only hand polish, never used a machine. I have dodo juice polish and srp AG.

Thanks

I remember many moons ago doing a similar spot on my Dad's mk5 GTI.  He sold it 5 years ago so shows how long ago it was.  I was only using a Dual Action but was impressed how easily the B pillar paint corrected.  I had only just started getting into it back then too, so was a great taster of what can be done.

Scratched mine then polished out, but scratches returned. Now I wrapped them in carbon fibre film.be2884ea4acbda49ce46a53a512d3e57.jpgf72df72378a6a0d89d1020ec464510d7.jpg

Are you sure?

I do think it is plastic Neil

I'm sure Chris

Ok..I wont argue

They are plastic... The finish is flawless other than the scratches. Unless they wet sand them and polish each one its not a gun finish.

Also I've never seen paint scratch that easily, even the softest Japanese paint.

But the real give away is the burr on the moulded edges if you gently lift a seal...

So can i polish the scratches out?

Yes. Better with a machine, but can also be done by hand I doubt SRP will do much. It has very little abrasive properties
