Best rim protection for 225/40 R18 ?

Featured Replies

Morning!

About to buy four new tyres for the vRS (2010 FL).

I find the wheels very prone to kerbing (well Mrs Dunc does) and have yet to find decent rim protection from 225/40 R18 tyres.

I had Contis on from new, and have tried Dunlops since. Neither offered decent rim protection, despite Dunlop saying their tyres had protection. I have heard and read on here that Goodyear F1 Eagles have better rim protection. Is this the case?

Can anyone suggest other tyre options that will give us decent protection?

Thanks guys!

Dunc

Yes..Eagle F1's

The best tyre Ive ever had and probably the best rim protector too

Bridgestone potenza s001 and Michelin pilot sport 3 on mine - both have fairly decent rim protection

I've fitted Alloygaters to the wifes car as she love to kirb her ride.(there was no way I going to write " loves to rim her ride"it just sounds wrong)

With in a day of fitting them I save the price of refinishing 1 front wheel  and they look ok.

Fitted Uniroyal Rainsport 3's (XL and with Rim protection)to my wife's Boxster and they have pretty good rim protection. The Michelin's on before that were even better. Much better ride quality on the RS3's though.

Thanks for the replies guys. Have found GY Eagle F1s for £73 each. Seems a good deal.

Interesting about the Porsche. I've often seen Porsches with tyres with huge rim protection ridges, a good cm or more.

It's almost as if these tyres are specially made for Porsche? Does anyone know more about this?

If that's fully fitted that's a real bargain, £25 less than cheapest I have seen

Great tyres we have then all-around

Not fully fitted. Just delivered.

Looking at £10 per corner to get them fitted, so reality is £83 each.

Thats still pretty good

Pretty good rim protection on the Eagle F1s yes - but I did still manage to curb one wheel during a spectacularly incompetent piece of reversing.

We've got ContiSport 3s on our TT (and I'll put them on the VRS when it needs new tyres) which do have a reasonable bit of rim protection. Like the Porsche the ones we found listed did state they were specifically for Audi, although I couldn't find any info on what this actually meant.

Fitted these to my VRS and am very happy with the tyres. However, zero rim protection. Something to bear in mind.

Thanks all. Appreciated, as ever.

Will go GY Eagle F1 unless someone can tell me where the Porsche tyres (with the huge rim protection lip) come from / or can be sourced, and then whether they will fit 225/40 R18s.

Cheers.

My Pilot sport 3's had very good rim protection compared to the original conti's.

Just my two pennies worth.

Never tried the Goodyear's but they get good overall reviews from people on here.

ChrisRs,

Maybe, and thanks. But the pics are the generic ones for the tyres.

Does anyone know what I mean here? I often see 911s parked up with huge flanges on the tyres so that it would be virtually impossible to kerb them. I've not noticed it on other makes of car. And I have looked! Geekery I know, but there you go!

Are these tyres made specifically for Porsche, or am I missing something - i.e. something that I could use to keep Mrs Dunc honest when it comes to dropping the kids off at school (in a rush with 7" granite kerbs!)

Cheers.

Dunc, know exactly what you mean. Tyres on my old 911 used to hang slightly over the rim of the wheel. You would have to be going some to kerb the wheel and it would involve wrecking the tyre too.

Sadly this is missing from the Uniroyals on the VRS, which makes kerbing the wheel very easy if you aren't paying attention. How do I know? Kerbed a wheel that had only just been refurbed :dull:

I ended up with GY F1 Assy 3s and was very pleased with them.

The rim protection is excellent.

I sold the MkII vRS in May and upgraded to a MkIII. Same - petrol DSG Estate with Columbus. It had the original Bridgestones on the back and some Firestones on the front. They were 3/4 worn and are now nearly done & getting noisy.

Have just ordered 4 more Assy 3s for £320 from Black Circles. Skoda will fit for £12 per corner incl. VAT.

Can't wait to protect the wheels from the kerb and get quieter & grippier tyres on the car!
