ABS Professional Repair?

Featured Replies

Would you call the below a professional repair?

This was the repair done on my ABS cable by a well regarded auto electricians only a few months ago.

Electrical tape and no heat shrink in sight. Bearing in mind this is right behind the wheel so has got covered in water and road muck.

No wonder it's failed and I now have the same fault code.

Back to them tomorrow to sort properly this time.

Grrr....

Looks like a novice or a small child has done it. Not sure what it is cable tied to. I'm hoping it's not cable tied to the brake hose!

Interesting listening to what the garage said when I'm not there :)

Well this is their second repair....

I think I'll just fix it myself. :@

I don't like to judge people by their appearance but I wouldn't be happy with those two Chuckle Brothers fiddling with my car.

How hard can it be to repair a broken wire and then waterproof the repair?

Looking at their second attempt the wires remain exposed. The whole idea of heat shrink is that it is sealed at both ends.

Well its an improvement. .. He's moved the cable tie from the hose and onto the feral of the hose.(not good enough for me though ) I recently done the same repair but it came as a complete new loom. Iirc about £50. 4 wires 2 for abs sensor 2 for brake pad wear indicator. 2 new plugs one end and the loom goes up into the black grommet on into the nsf inner wing then the wires are heat shrink crimped to the original wiring from the vehicle afterwards my repair looked like it left the factory. Out of interest how much you pay them.

I originally paid £90+VAT but this included an AC regassing at the same time.

I guess it was 2 hrs at 45/hr.

I'm going to email them this picture and see what they say. I'm not wasting any more time going in and leaving the car with them for the day.

Shocking repair for a professional.

Should be soldered and individually heat shrinked and then 1 or 2 outer heat shrinks. I would have used the combined heat shrink with glue for the outer layer. Well that is how I sorted the last ABS loom that I had to repair and it is still fine to this day.

Mind what would I know I'm only a DIYer.

Exactly!

I will be putting some silicon grease in there and then sealing with self amalgamating tape over the join for now until I can sort it properly.

Well email sent :)

Hi,

I had my Octavia in with you on Monday for a second repair on the ABS loom.

Despite you heat shrinking the connection, after a couple of turns on full lock, it has already exposed the wires again, as the heat shrink doesn't appear to go very far over the ends of the cabling.

No doubt water will get into the loom and cause further problems, again.
I've attached a picture of how it currently looks.

I will now  more than likely end up having to fix this properly myself.

If "Lincoln's Premier Car Electrical and Car Security Specialists." cannot make a simple watertight repair on some cabling, I'm glad I had not got any other work scheduled with yourselves.

I'm not sure what I expect the outcome of this email to be, but I mostly wanted to let you know my disappointment in your work for what should be a very simple job.

Regards,
