Columbus satnavigation

Featured Replies

Hi.

Just a quick one.

Got a quote for Columbus sat Nav for 780 pounds. Is this a good price? I spent 160 pounds on a tom tom sat Nav last year but not sure if this upgrade is worth it

I apologise for reposting.

I am on mobile device at the moment.

How much do you charge to fit?

Fitting is fairly straight forward, requiring nothing more than a torx driver, trim removal tools, and a bit of help from various guides on here I would think. You could fit it yourself. Parts needed would be a gps antenna, aerial splitter wire (perhaps), and a new fascia (dependant on what you have at the moment). Then some coding with a laptop and VCDS. Only slightly sticky part would be the age of your car and whether or not you would need to upgrade the cars CANbus gateway to prevent the well documented battery drain issue. I would think something like £20 or so for an install if you supplied all the parts required, but it's certainly one of the easier jobs you could tackle yourself.

Edit: JUst seen on the other post your car is a 2014 so no CANbus issues to worry about.

Thanks.

I am not very technical, but hopefully I can do it. Is it a good system though? I know there is another system out but not sure which is best. Do you know where I  can buy one?

Whereabouts are you?

Ah, bit far. I was gonna say stop in and have a look at mine before you make any plans, but North Yorks is a real good way away.

They come up for sale on here every now and again, so I'd keep an eye on the classified section maybe.

Thank you for your help. I will look online to see what features it has too.

For £780 I'd expect brand new, latest version and fitted as well.

£450 - £550 is about right for a used one.

I know there is another system out but not sure which is best.

The Columbus is the top of the range, the next step down from that is the Amundsen which is the one you're talking about, thing is with the Amundsen is the map updates cost a fortune.

Stay away from the columbus in the fabia imo.

While it's skoda top end unit it was never intended for the fabia and as such the sound quality is pitchy/poor.

Just search the forums and Internet and you will see.

I had one when I first got my vrs and sold it after a week due to the sound.

It's also not an issues vcds can sort as it's a db mismatch between the system and speaker set up/positioning in the fabia.

I would go for the amundsen if it was my money...

Thank you for your responses.

I will stick with what I have, it isn't an urgent upgrade. Just something that I wanted to look at getting as it would be a good addition to my car that's all.

I haven't had any problems with sound in mine. Maybe your ears are weird?

My ears are not weird :) - I understand 100% but nothing at the moment is punching me in the face or asking me to purchase it. Don't we all want to buy something that is going to be the very best. As much as I like the Fabia, I am not sure if its a car I am going to keep after the 3 year period I have with it.

No, not your ears, the other guy. :D

aholloway21's ears aren't weird as out of the box it does sound crap. However I don't agree with him that it can't be made to match the standard Swing but don't want to start a slanging match.

My solution (so far) has been.

1. To be coded as an Octavia II to reduce the treble crash.

2. To be coded to enable the advanced setup menus.

3. Using the advance setup menus, disable "loudness".

The last option brings it properly into line.

I am now trying to find an Octavia II or Superb amplifier as this will allow me to enable the full equalisation options of the Columbus and then I'll upgrade the speakers.

Canton amplifier on eBay.de - item number 311374627950.

Well, is the system worth getting for someone who doesn't drive much? It's rare that I am driving more than 30 minutes a day, and if so, I know where I am going.

Looking into either climate control or cruise control as other options.

Probably not then.

Probably not to be honest, and if you're not driving more than 30 minutes per day then I wouldn't have thought cruise control would do you much good either so I'd probably look into climate control. If that would cost a fortune then maybe come back to the others.

Go for  cruise control (~£300).  Climate control is almost impossible to retrofit as the wiring loom is £1000's  alone.

I agree with 'PhilTheGeek' in that climate control would cost loads in parts and way more in labour and CC seems excessive for '30 minutes per day' of driving.
