Locking wheel bolt removal

Featured Replies

Just been doing a brake service on my car and the locking bolts were done up so tight they have now rounded

managed to undo the rear and undo the locking bolts and carry out a service on the rear brakes, whoever did the front up when the tyres were changed has overtightened them massively

what are my options? Does the laser locking nut removal socket from halfords work on bolts?

was going to try a t60 torx but dont think it will grip sufficiently

thanks

is there a rotating collar on the locking wheel nuts ?

if there is, you'll need to try and cut/ remove the collar first.

once it's removed, you could use a locking nut removal socket, but a tight fitting spline socket will work just as well.

No its just a standard locking bolt without a collar, I was just hoping someone may have experience of the laser removal tool as ita more for nuts than bolts

failing that I will try a torx bit, my set in 3/8 and 1/2" only go up to 50 so will have to see if I can get a 60 from somewhere

I've never used any of these purpose made nut removal tools, I've always just used a tight fitting socket [not a hex type though ] hammered on.

a 12 point socket [ spline type ] is better than a torq type socket as it has more sides to grip

you also have more of a choice with sizes as you can use an imperial socket

As Seve88 said a 12 point socket hammered on usually works.

Otherwise, I've used a large tang-through screwdriver  or hammered in a hex shaft chisel.

You might even have to drill down the guts of the bolt & remove the head.

You should try your local tyre place as they normally have locking removal sockets which they hammer on as its quite common for customers to lose their locking nut key. I've tried the halfords removal key and it didn't work as I think it needs a air wrench and couldn't get it to grip on to the damaged bolt. I ended up taking it to my tyre place and they removed it within 5 minutes.

Ensure replacement bolt ready to fit once offending bolt/s removed.

In all honesty I haven't read or seen a car that has had it wheels removed/ stolen for years..

Favourite thing to-do as members have said above, get a tight fitting box socket over bolt and hammer-on then using 'T' bar undo bolt.

If box socket is damaged, you can easily replace it, from almost anywhere.

Had this problem recently. Tyre place tried knocking a socket over but the locking wheel bolt was round.....

In the end we had to drill it out, ****ing nightmare!
