Hi all,

I've been driving around for a while with an annoying / worrying fault where the car is hesitant around 2k RPM and then occasionally a fault occurs which then limits the car (limp mode??). Every time I turn the ignition off and restart it clears and only recently have I managed to get a friend to plug in a diagnostic tool which found "P0299 - Turbocharger / Supercharger Underboost" fault code. What are the likely causes of this, I'm hoping not the Turbo? Also, for someone with no experience with car repairs are there simple checks that I can do to eliminate potential causes?

My car is a 2007 Octavia 2.0TD PD 170bhp VRs and is entirely un-modified.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Chances are the vnt mechanism on the turbo is coked up and sticks.

Can be quite easily sorted with a bit of Mr muscle as per the below thread :)

I agree that it is likely a sticky VNT mechanism. It gets clogged up with soot and cr@p over time. A Mr Muscle clean is tricky on the PD170 though, as the turbo sits above the exhaust manifold, not below like other TDIs.

I have the same issue on my own PD170 car. I haven't found a way to successfully do the Mr Muscle clean. I think I will need to bite the bullet and remove the turbo, disassemble and clean on the workbench.

Have just had this come up on my cr170. Going to run a tank of forte turbo cleaner through before more drastic measures are taken.

Smileonimpact - hope Forte works for you. I tried it and it did sweet Fanny Adams on my car and it was expensive. If this is the first fault occurrence on your car then I guess it's worth a try.

Apologies, I'm not actually a Skoda driver. I found this thread when  was trying to diagnose the same problem on my Passat 170.

 

I managed to get mine sorted pretty cheaply and it was a surprise fix. As I couldn't afford to fix the problem, I carried on driving as is, resetting and it getting gradually worse for about 2 months. It eventually became almost undrivable, and very suddenly the DPF light and engine light came on as well as the standard limp mode.

 

At this point I took the car to a specialist, and they realised my DPF was blocked, and did a DPF delete. Problem solved! This was a particularly tricky one as I had it diagnosed several times and just got the P0299 error code, and it wasn't until it had really become undrivable that the DPF error was actually thrown up itself. The specialist also checked the turbo and said it was in perfectly good condition. 

Hopefully this might help someone who was in the same position as me, when I was researching the problem I couldn't find anyone who'd had a DPF issue at the stem of a P0299 problem!

Hi all,

As an update to my turbo problem; my car has been in and out of my local garage trying to solve this problem about 4 or 5 times. So far they've charged me £25 for 1/2hr's diagnosis where they stated confidently that it was the turbo that was knackered and causing the problem. They said there was a lot of play in the shaft and the vanes were sticking plus the turbo whistled. I mentioned that this had been the case since I bought the car 70k miles earlier but they dismissed this. So I stumped up the cash for them to replace the turbo. £1,150 later, I drive away a "fixed" car. No such luck. Granted, when it's not faulting (or trying to) the performance is better but that only lasted a day. So since then the car has been back and forth to the garage in question another 3 times. However, they can never get the car to fault or have problems. I reckon they probably don't know what it should perform like as they obviously don't know the car like me. They have checked all the vacuum pipes; no leaks found, changed a sensor or two (I don't know which ones but will try to get all the details once I've got to the bottom of this) and re-calibrated do the turbo?!?

None of this has worked. However, for the 1st time since this problem raised its head I had another fault on Monday, a DPF fault. It went away after 20 mins but this makes me think that alxn70 you may have found a lead for me / the garage to work on.

Fingers crossed this proves to be the root cause. Getting fed up and rather concerned that this car's going to coast me a small fortune.
