Vrs sump bolts

Featured Replies

Are they all underneath and easy to access? Heard there are some on the side which are a pig but it was on a Passat with the 1.9 tdi

None at the side, all at the rear with easy access.

Brilliant so not a hard task to clean the oil pick up then? Can you reuse the o-Ring on the puck up?

Just checked again, I thought you meant the sump bolt as in the plug to drain the oil :D

The bolts that hold the sump in place are 10mm with allen key heads as well.

You have four down the side of the gearbox which can be awkward, you'll need a good deep ball head allen key to crack them off.

I've cleaned a few oil pick ups now on my vrs's and it's always been worth doing. Not a hard job overall.

+ some bell housing bolts go threw sump ;)

Exactly what I was just about to ask ;) cheers mate

I think it's just one that does, underneath starter motor

I thought two under but might be wrong... I know nothing really :)

long bell housing bolt I'm on about, goes from gearbox side threaded in sump :)

Yeah I'm on about the 16/18mm bolts around the gearbox.

Thinking about it there are three ;)

two right at bottom, one long one just under starter motor :)

You know... You might be right!

The jobs getting bigger and bigger the more we post, just abandon it now.

There were three ;) one long one short and one behind the gearbox mount at the bottom. Found some turbo in the sump... Must have gone down the oil drain. Anyone know where the drain empties? Is it directly into the sump or onto the baffel over the crank?

Best way to check is to put a little bit of oil down and watch where it comes out.

Your turbo must have failed quite bad to end up in the sump, bearings must be in many pieces!

Get some pictures of the job up, I've always liked picture books more :D

It was all degreased, cleaned and sealed back up within a couple of hours so no pics haha.

The impeller on the cool side was floating about inside the compressor housing with barely any blades on and I found the shaft bent at a right angle in the boost piping before the intercooler.

I'm only asking where the oil drain is because I'm wondering if there is any laying on top of the crank baffle plate. (Only thought about this after sealing it all up :()

I wouldn't worry about it personally.

The oil return is a few inches up the block past the sump so thinking about it, it's going to be inline or above the baffle plate.

But the oil return is basically 90° angle and into the block so nothing's going to have been shooting out, anything will have ran down into the sump rather than shooting out onto the plate.

It would be a poor design if oil and crap gets poured straight onto a plate designed to keep oil at the bottom out the way.
