Mtec Brakes with protective coating

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Brakes finally need sorting on my '07 VRS tfsi estate, discs and pads required up front for the MOT in 2 weeks..

After reading the forums and mulling over all the advice previously administered to others I'm going for MTEC discs with Mintex pads.

My question is, has anyone had the MTEC discs with the protective coating they offer? If so did it prevent the hubs from rusting? Also, if so, what colour have people gone for, black or silver would be my choice but if anyone has any pics of them on a VRS let me know.

I'm also going for grooved only, wont be going for drilled because of all the horror stories with cracking and warping etc. associated with drilled discs, but if I'm going for the grooved option, is it worth going for dimpled as well?

Cheers.

Had them on my Celica, after 18months the coated bits still looked fine after rubbing the brake dust off.

Personally I'd go for plain discs, the buzzz the groves make is annoying. Not sure if Mtec do plain but I know you can get Brembo and Pagid discs with a coating too.

Cheers for that....Mtec don't do plain discs, the price is slightly cheaper than the usual Pagid offering from Euro car parts and even if it's just cosmetic the grooves do look good IMHO even if they don't give any performance gains....interested to hear that there was noise/vibration from them though, not something I've read elsewhere but worth considering.

I've had MTEC front and back grooved & dimpled discs with the coating for a couple of years now - bought for looks, not performance, but they stop really well in the dry and wet.  The hubs and internal vents haven't rusted.  The coating obviously wears off where the pads rub almost immediately ... and afterwards the discs readily rust there when washed, just like normal discs. I have a little rust staining either side of the pad area as well but nothing like I've seen on previous discs.

I don't get ANY noise from either set of brakes using standard Pagid pads.  However, it's easy to fit the discs the wrong way so that the spiral pattern is opposite rotation direction so follow the directions carefully (I didn't and it was noisy for 5 minutes on my test run until I realised and swapped the discs round)!  Also need to put copper grease on the back of the pads (never on the friction material) to prevent chatter.

Cheers Rizmod, just what I needed, thanks for the info. Discs and pads on order this morning....have a garage just across the road from me and for the sake of £50 I'll let them have the honour of putting them on for me, but good advice none the less :)
