Fitting 288mm Front Discs

Featured Replies

Dear fellow Octavians

I need to fit new pads and discs at the front tomorrow due to corroded inner face of disc causing a heat build up on the OSF caliper. Does the caliper carrier require removing to replace discs or is there enough wiggle room to get them out/in?

I tried the search function and found lots of info on discs, pads, rear carrier bolts etc but no info for the front fitment.

Any advice most welcome

No, Carriers need to come off for the front discs.

Damn. Hope the bolts aren't as tight as the rears. Thanks.

No, not as tight as rear, plus access is easier due to being able to turn the wheels.

here's a you tube guide

Thanks for all the advice and the vid. Perfect. Just what I needed to know. Now I'm prepared. Great stuff.

Thanks again.

All done and dusted. Quite straightforward. Carrier bolts a bit tight but slipping an offcut of steel gas pipe over the socket bar gave enough leverage to crack them loose. The scary bit was the first few braking tries before the disc coating wore off! No all cushty.

when you say disc coating, do you mean the factory greasy stuff that acts as an anti corrosion protection until fitted? If so I have always cleaned any new discs I have fitted, with rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner before the pads touch them as assumed would contaminate the pads irreparably and permanently if you didn't? I only mention this because as far as I was aware, there isn't any other kind of coating on the discs?

Sorry for long time in replying. Life's too busy ATM

Yes, they were coated with a silver paint type coating. I bought brake cleaner to clean before fitting but the instructions said Do NOT REMOVE COATING. So I didn't. Don't know why they say that. It wasn't long before they bedded in. Now they are still very sharp. Much better than before. Also handbrake feels a lot tighter.

So you've got a handbrake for the front wheels, where's the lever?

Some manufacturers coat their discs in some kind of primer that apparently helps bed them in. The Jurid discs I just put on my car were like this and no, you're not supposed to clean them.
