DIY clutch replacement

Featured Replies

2006 1.9TDI PD105 clutch is slipping and I can't afford garage prices so am going ahead with a driveway strip down.

Has anyone done this that can detail tools required and any hints/tips?

I have a reasonable selection of tools but am unsure of any specialised ones required.

My plan is to strip it down and see what needs replacing before rushing to buy a clutch kit.

Please feel free to post any links to YouTube clips etc and list probable parts that will need replaced.

I already figure I'll need friction plate, slave cylinder, gearbox oil seal, thrust bearing.

I've no idea what the flywheel situation is but if it's a dual mass item I think it'll be prudent to replace it with a single mass item.

Any help and suggestions welcomed.

Hi MicMac,

Did you brave the DIY clutch replacement? If so, can you offer any advice, as I too am planing this job on a Mk2 1.9Tdi with BXE engine, on the driveway, as the value of the car doesn't justify a garage job and as it not a daily driver, I can take my time, within reason!

Also, did you stay with DMF of do a SMF Conversion?

You need to be able to support the engine and gearbox when your lowering the gearbox out. Other than that a lot of taking parts off. Align the clutch plate properly, torque up, and maybe replace the inner oil seal while your there. Might need a ball joint separator also. If you don't replace the flywheel your meant to get it skimmed also but that's debatable.

Not sure if you need to replace slave cylinder.

I relented and let a garage do it, my body wasn't going to thank me for crawling around on my back underneath the car.

There are plenty of YT videos showing the procedure, search by engine type for a video rather than specifically an Octavia which are less numerous than other VAG models sharing the same hardware.

Sorry I can't help directly but it seems a straightforward procedure given access and an able-body.

I wanted a SMF fitted but figured a like for like DMF was best considering the car's expected lifespan, I'm still driving it!
