How much would you pay for head gasket replacement?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

in another thread, I describe a developing coolant loss issue with my 2003 100k 1.9tdi . I've been told it needs a new head gasket and it will be a 'four figure sum' - no more precise than that. This is in Aberdeen where everything seems to be expensive, but what should I expect to pay for this?

Any advice well received.

Thanks.

I lived in The Deen for 2yrs while in uni there, and yeah everything is pricey - courtesy of oil business..

I cant put figures onit tbh, but over a grand seems excessive.. you do an engine swap for that inc the engine! Id go shopping beyond aberdeen...

Make sure its the head gasket 1st, have you had a pressure test to confirm ?

Thanks guy.Guarage says it will cost me > 800 to just walk away from the car. They suggested a new gasket without the shim for £1200 all in, but up to 2k for the proper job. I watched them feel along the cylender head and record a 3-4 thou dip on the side of one valve, all good elsewhere. They said it was fine without the skim shop work. How do we feel about this, apart from the £100 per hour labout cost...

wow, that's really expensive just for a head - £500 to £600 - 2k should get an engine rebuild !
