Best cost-efficient dash cam?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've never had a dash cam before but I know how useful they can be, if anyone could recommend any decent dash cams with a limit of around £100 that would be great!

I'm a big advocate of the Mobius (~£60, ~£100 with all extras required to fit it). Good picture quality, reliable, upgradeable with a supercap instead of battery, can be setup the most discreet using a lens cable extension and replacement parts are easily available and cheap.

Whatever dashcam you buy, try to get a capacitor version. Constantly charging kills a normal battery.

I have a B40 A118. It records in 1080p, is very discrete and comes in around £55.

This one is the capacitor version, and comes with the GPS module used to record your GPS co-ordinates and speed.

Here's a quick example of the quality, although YouTube really degrades this, due to the trees lining the road.

Have a look a TechMoan's review.

Oh and sorry to sound stupid, but my capacitor version, is it the type that plugs in or something so you never have to worry about the batteries? Cheers  :D

Yes you plug it into the car.

The best way is to hard wire it in with a piggy back fuse onto a switched circuit.

Then when you start the car, it gets power and automatically starts recording. When you turn the car off, it also turns off. :)

That way you can fit it and not forget to plug it in each journey.

All of them should be wired in to the car's power, regardless of how they store power internally.

The capacitor is better for several reasons:

1) It won't explode and torch your car if its damaged/overheats

2) Runs cooler so less risk of damage to the camera, particularly on hot days

3) Will last a lot longer in terms of charge cycles compared to a battery so more reliable
