Insurance query

has anybody ever had a car stolen with the keys before, how much grief can i expect from the insurance company in regards to them paying out. at the moment i'm told to expect to wait at least eight weeks and they're refusing to give me a courtesy car so it looks like i have a 30 mile bike trip everyday!!!!

There is a thread about an Octy vrs that was stolen with the keys. Search for it an ask that guy!

Sadly my dads A4 was stolen with the keys when thier house was broken into. Neither the motor insurance or the house insurance compaines would pay out, each saying it was the others responsability. Luckily enough for him though the car was found the next day unscathed.

Insurance companies usually get really arsey about paying out when cars have been stolen with the keys. A friend of mine had his Evo TME stolen at gun point. His insurance company said that because the car was taken with the keys and his consent they wouldn't pay out. He asked what the feck he was supposed to do, give them the keys and turn the anti-hijack off at gunpoint, or get shot over it. In the end they relented and paid out. I have similar stories with two other people I know who had their Imprezas hi-jacked. That's partly why I got rid of mine, security's getting so good these days thieving-pikeys need the keys to physically steal the car, and will do almost anything to get the keys off you. Insurance companies are foul and pestilent organisations, I despise them almost as much as car thieves.

Who do insurance companies think they are by not paying out on cars stolen using the keys if the keys where in the house. That's balls. I mean if you leave the keys in the ignition you are daft and deserve all you gey but even if you have an intruder alarm a thief could be in, get the keys and make off before you are even down the stairs.

thanks guys, though not really looking too good for me is it? i'm not the giving up type so i'll fight the insurance company tooth and nail as i've got feck all left to lose.we've had a good drive round with no joy, as i've said in another post i reckon the car is or was in a inner city lock up in a matter of hours being stripped and parted out!!! i tried to explain to the local CID that although its a skoda it's 180bhp and will do a shade under 150mph, they had five and a half hours between leaving the car on the drive and not finding it there in the morning, do they really expect it to be local?

anyway just in case anybody out there knows anything its DF52CYU

fingers crossed!!!!

Over here in Belfast a guy left the keys in his focus and ran into a shop for a pint of milk. His car was gone within a few seconds of leaving it. He rang the talk show on a local radio station from his mobile and gave the car details which the presenter gave out on air. Someone rang in within a couple of minutes having spotted the car. The theives must have been tuned in because they scarpered leaving the car undamaged further up the road. Might be worthwhile phoning in to your local station with details of your problem. i'm sure they would be happy to help and you've got nothing to lose.

Seams people are watching your every move around here.... 7 sets of keys have been stolen from cars where people have gone out into their front drive and unlocked their boot (keys in) or wacked them in ignition nd nipped bak in... come out keys gone.... but not car.... YET

My insurance specifically states they will need to see all sets of keys in the event of a theft claim before paying out. They did of course ask how many sets of keys I had at the policy outset, being honest, i said 2 but in hindsight saying just 1 set could have been wise should the worst ever happen.

but what if the car turns up with the other set of keys in it? i decided to be totally honest. my insurance company havn't played up yet but i am building myself a case just in case they do. i have since found a lot of information on what is known as they hook and cane method, this involves the keys being taken through letterboxes and catflaps etc. i have also seen a link to the insurance ombudsman stating that if the insurance company will not pay out in these cases then they should make more effort to make these scenarios obvious to the policyholder!!!!

i will keep BRISKODA informed especially because ADRIAN FLUX is listed/advertised on the briskoda site. incase anyone from adrian flux reads this then take note. i will inform follow briskodiands of exactly what happens with my claim, obviously i would be more than happy to let everybody know how well i'd been treated.

please forgive me to be judging too early but i have heard too many insurance horror stories on here already. please be different!!!!!

Now thats a fair point, looks like I chose the correct path.

ADRIAN FLUX

Yep, me too. Hope all goes well for you but do please keep us informed.

ADRIAN FLUX if i'm correct are simply the brokers and don't make the decision on whether there is a payout or not. That's down to the insurance company themselves although in your case as there is no damaged vehicle to inspect, the insurance company's evidence is largely that supplied by ADRIAN FLUX and based on what you told them and the police.

The process should remain transparent though and you have every right as far as i know the request to view the report submitted to the insurance company by the broker though ADRIAN FLUX are bound by law to be truthful in their record of the circumstances surrounding the theft as are you.

Good Luck..

hi,

adrian flux said thanks for reporting the theft, wanted no details at all and just gave me the number of the company who insure me. then the girl on the phone cut me off!!!!!

cheers flux

i called the number they gave me at a 9.15 am the morning it happened. it rang for ages then a woman answered. i said i was calling to make an insurance claim. she said it was an office block but no insurance companies were there. she went away and said yes jubilee were there but she'd worked there two years but she'd never heard of them.when i finaaly got through the woman was rude and unhelpful!!!!

i guess i am jumping the gun by being worried, but there are a fair amount of horror stories with insurance companies in these circumstances. i just feel that so far both flux and jubilee have been about as unhelpful as they can be!!!!

fingers crossed it will all come out right in the end.

i will try to keep an open mind for now, although it's very hard, the more i read the worse i feel.

ok, it's dy three since the octy was taken and to be fair i'm probably worrying over nothing, the insurance probably will pay out in full. i've checked "book" value for the car and its a little higher than i paid so i should be ok there even with the

Do you have the usual driver legal protection with your insurance? You may want to consider giving them a call to see exactly where you stand. I would also suggest that 8 weeks is a little too long to be left without transport, and you might consider mentioning that to them as well as getting reciepts for any public transport journey's you make.

  • Author

hi stu,

yes i'm sure i do have legal cover but i thought that only covered me in the event of an accident? as for public transport i work for the local bus company as an engineer so i get that for free. only trouble is i start work at 6am and there's no soddin buses lol. have u researched the insurance thing before or had some experience? you were pretty quick to post some useful info. i was told that because it was theft i am not entitled to a car until mine is found. i think i better star asking some more questions though!!!

cheers for your help

adam

I don't profess to be any sort of expert Adam, but I do normally try and read the T&C's of a policy before I buy. As I said 8 weeks is a little bit too long and perhaps by exerting a little well placed pressure you may be able to resolve the situation. If you a member of RAC or AA,these often have free legal helplines you can call. Forwarned is forearmed and the belief that they will always try to **** you over should put you in good stead to do battle.

You may not be entitled to a repalecment car following theft but you are entitled to prompt and courteous service with regard to your claim.
