Can the DSG be filled via the strainer housing, I imagine yes, but slower than a snail on a greasy wall

Yes it can. You need a funnel and tubing of a suitable diameter to fit in the hole in the filter housing.

Just noticed your profile.....you have a 1.6TDI DSG. That means you have the 7 speed dry clutch version of the DSG. The fluid in the 7 speed dry clutch box is good for life and doesn't ever need changing.
