Newbie question, what is this part?

Featured Replies

Ok excuse what may seem a stupid question, I was working under my pickup and noticed this rubber joint seemed very oily.

Firstly

1) what is it called/for (picture is taken from.underneath, pretty much in the centre of the engine bay)

2) could it be leaking oil, and what is it (transmission oil)

It does appear to have split one "ring" from the left

I have checked the Haynes manual and can't see anything... Maybe I'm being really stupid!

Looks like the protective boot over the inner joint of one of your steering tie-rods, I think.

That would make sense I guess, as it's too high to be transmission related. I don't have PAS, would there be an oil in there or is it spray from somewhere else (as I am definitely leaking oil from somewhere slowing just not entirely sure where!!!)

Agree.

The moisture is coming from the outside. Could be water or brake fluid. Needs investigation. Feel it, smell it, etc.

Inside that boot there is nothing to leak out.

Thank you for that, On another note as you two both seem knowledgeable what is the extra hole on these suspension arms for.

Mine doesn't have it but I have found a arm with it, on special offer clearance that I guess I could fit and just not use the extra hole. Is it for anti roll bars or something? post-121085-1439800315517_thumb.png

Yes.
