Quick questions for newbie

Recommended Posts

I've read the manual for the Superb Mk3 but still have a few questions that I've either missed or didn't understand. Grateful if someone is able to answer these:

  1. Is there an audio or visual driver alert for all 3 rear passengers not wearing their seat belts?
  2. Why is heated washer jets an option on the L&K (or any of the trim levels)? I thought this was a standard feature on even the most basic of modern cars.
  3. Why does the Columbus system have 2 SD card slots? What can they be used for?
  4. What can the Columbus DVD drive be used for? DVD movie playback or DVD audio?
  5. Also, what is the integrated WiFi used for?
  6. In this video, it shows white on white for the dash dials and looks really bad. What options result in this? https://youtu.be/df1914M39oc?t=15m18s
  7. Are the rear seat heating, just outer seats or all 3?
  8. Can the DSG paddles be used to override the gear in auto mode? (like it does with BMWs)
  9. Page 79 of the manual talks about a winter position for the wiper blades? What is this?
  10. There are things in the manual that state configuration which a specialist garage can make e.g. activation/deactivation of a final windscreen wiper wipe after the last one as mentioned on page 80. How much do these configuration changes cost and is it relatively easy for the garage?
  11. Can the radar aspect of the Advanced Cruise Control be disabled so it behaves like basic cruise control?
  12. Is it likely that the Auxiliary heating will ever be an option in the UK?
  13. Are all the gadgety type options in the Superb available in the Octavia or does the Superb have options that are exclusive to the Superb?
  14. What is in the wheel well if a space saver wheel isn't specified?
  15. Can a space saver wheel be ordered after sales? And will it be at the same cost as when specifying from new?
  16. Does the ISOfix front seat option just add the hooks or does the option do anything else?

Thanks in advance

5) internet access I would guess.

7) I believe it's just the outer two as there are only two buttons.

14) tyre repair kit

15) yes, but it's usually more expensive.

16) what else can it do? Isofix is just that, hooks fixed directly to the car.

Thanks for the reply. I find the Isofix option strange, why is this a £45 option? Surely having the points in the front seat make no difference to those who don't need it. Seems almost pointless having it as a chargeable option (especially on the L&K version). Why not just throw it in.

I can only answer a few off the top of my head...

1. I can only respond with my experience in the Superb II. It somehow senses when there's a rear seat passenger and the warning appears on my instrument panel if they don't have their seatbelt on. It doesn't distinguish which passenger. Simply placing boxes or bags on the rear seat hasn't ever activated my rear seatbelt warning.

3. The SD Card slots can be used for digital music files, video files, adding your own PPOIs (Personal Points of Interest - like speed cameras) to the navigation, adding vCards and GPS Photo based navigation, updating the maps/logos/bluetooth/firmware. Why 2 slots? Versatility would be my best guess.

4. Both. Will play "homemade" MP3 DVDs.

5. Provides hotspot Internet access with the LTE option (sim slot in the Columbus control unit) and access with the optional Media Command.

6. That's the L&K trim level. Some like it, some don't.

7. Just the outer. I've always considered the Superb a 4+1 rather than a 5 seater.

9. Page 79 in my copy of the manual talks about folding mirrors, but I found the section you mean.  When the wipers are in the parked position you can't lift the wipers because it's obstructed by the trailing edge of the bonnet. When you switch off the ignition with the wipers operating they return to the parked position. If you want to put a winter blanket across the screen you can switch it, per the manual, so wipers stop wherever they are when you switch off the ignition rather than return to the parked position. This allows you to use the wipers to secure the screen blanket. The "service" position is to enable changing the blades.

10. The example you give, the delayed extra wipe after using washer, is a value set in the vehicle computer. It can be changed by VCDS or by a dealer. It's simply a matter of plugging into the OBD socket below the steering wheel.

11. A question I've been wondering, but so far it points to "no".

12. I don't see it coming anytime soon. It's been a Superb option for many years but is only generally offered in countries that suffer more severely cold winters than the UK experiences.

14. Tyre sealant with electric pump. I have this in my Superb II and without the spare wheel there's enough room for my small toolbox and an electric tyre inflator.

Looking at the MKlll octy, which look pretty much identical.

1. three symbols in the dash light up to show they are functioning on start up. and glow if someone is present.

8. Yes

10. As suggested find someone with VCDS.

11. No, always ACC.

13. Mine as most of the tech. Noticeable absences Traffic jam assist, BSD, Smart headlight system, TV.

15. Unless you have a sympathetic dealer, MORE expensive because you have already purchased the compressor and gunk.

If that is a quick question I would hate to see your long question. :D

No. 2. I have not found it a standard fitting on lower to medium spec cars.

No.4. I have watch movies using the Columbus unit.

No. 7. Just the outer ones.

No. 11. I have been told it can be disabled but I do not how.

No  12. Unlikely.

LOL I said questions (plural). Although each question was quick to answer, there were many of them.

I do have some longer questions but I'm still researching things so I may find the answer to them myself. If not then there will be a follow up post.

With regards to the SD cards for Columbus system, can each SD card contain different content. E.g. Can SD card 1 can contain some videos, music and POI while SD card 2 has it's own mixture of content?

Yes and No.

Different items must be in specifically named folders. Audio in "music", vCards in "destinations", photos in "gps-pictures".

PPOIs are transferred from the SD Card to the Columbus' built-in SSD. There must not be anything else on the SD Card. Once they're transferred the SD Card is no longer needed in the slot.

That's great, thank you. So having two SD card slots is just a way to give you more storage than what is available on a single SD card. Sounds like a great system.

Are they SDHC slots (i.e. max of 32GB) or do they support SDXC (supports all the 32GB+ higher capacity cards)?

Thanks again.

SD, SDHC and SDXC.

FAT16/32, VFAT, NTFS, exFAT (the latter is useful for Mac owners as NTFS isn't supported and FAT16/32 has file size limitations). This also applies to hard drives connected to the USB socket.

Sweet, everything is supported and 2 x 128GB would be cheap and more than enough storage. Actually, I think I could get away with a single 64GB card but there's room for future growth.

Don't forget you also get about 10GB for your own music/video files on the Columbus' internal SSD, the rest of the SSD is reserved for navigation data (maps, POIs, etc), Radio Station logos, the Gracenote database, and other miscellaneous system files.

Good Afternoon,

Really basic question I'm afraid.  I'm struggling to see what the WLAN in my SUPERB III (SE L Exec) Estate actually does!  It connects to my iPhone, but I can't pass any data.  Can anyone give me a noddy guide to using WLAN?

Thanks

Yes I have the same question, I connected to it using my phone as a wifi hotspot and it just gobbled up all the data allowance in about ten minutes of use and seemed to do nothing except connect to BT music.

A complete waste of money so far along with the phonebox that seems to do nothing to improve the connection, but it does remind you to not forget the phone when you leave the car so I guess that was worth £250!

my advice to anyone ordering is to save themselves £600 and not get either of these.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't that a standard feature on most Skoda's with Bluetooth connectivity? My current Mk3 Fabia does this if I have my phone connected to the car via Bluetooth (which is 99% of the time) and after I open the driver door to leave the car and the ignition is off, the warning notice flashes on the Maxidot to "Please remember to take your phone"

In which case it a complete waste of money, does nothing.
