recommend me a good dashcam on a budget please

Featured Replies

i think the time has come to put one in both my vehicles due to what i suspect was an attempt on some douchebag attempting to cause my mrs to crash into her (he was parked on the left and just as she was virtually level  with her he pulled across infrontof her and slammed on the brakes  to make it look like she had rear ended him)

thankfully she clocked him and stopped way short and when she pointed to her mobile phone on the screen saying it was a dashcam he got in his car and screeched off

anyway it got me thinking of adding one to both my vehicles but not sure if a cheap non brand one ebay is any good but dont really want to spend hundrends on each ome

i also do not know if i need gps tracking or for that matter what it is for ???

both of these will be hard wired in so there is no need to have to plug them in i have a couple of 32gb cards kicking around so thats not a problem

just could do with a pointers on which one is currently a good buy

thank you

Ive got this,  Nextbasehttp://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/cameras-and-camcorders/camcorders/dash-cams/next-base-incarcam-202-lite-hd-dashboard-camera-black-10098188-pdt.html?srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~~~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&s_kwcid=AL!3391!3!46931127215!!!g!58516551294!&ef_id=VdQtdAAAAQfb4oDQ:20150819071708:s  superceded now by a newer and more expensive model ,but these images are fine

This is the newer model http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/nextbase-302g-deluxe-in-car-camera/?gclid=CMPUldHNtMcCFQXnwgodNqIIEg

either one is good, the dodgy's spot them and less likely to try it on

GPS makes it more expensive, you can have a model with it in, it shows which road you were on and accurately shows your true speed, most of these dubious guys are trying it on at junctions or reversing, so I did not see a need to spend hundreds

I too am a Nextbase fan. Excellent product aftersales service. They replaced mine after 11 months & paid the carriage both ways. Mine is the Nextbase 402g with GPS.

The advantage with GPS it shows (without argument), exactly when & where the incident occurred & what speed you was doing at the time. The other party then can't claim you was speeding - unless of course you were.

Beware of the cheap(ish) ones Lidl has been selling recently; it says 1080p on the front, but it is actually up-scaled 720p - the difference between this and real 1080 is huge - you cant read oncoming number plates with this camera, even if you are stationary and they are only doing ~30mph.

It has other issues as well, you have to manually turn it on and off, it takes ages to start recording, and it wont operate if the internal battery is flat; I even tried a more powerful charger to get around this, but the issue is obviously inside the unit and not the cheap 600mA car charger.

I have found with some units, that image quality improves over a few days use - perhaps some kind of protective coating on the lens; however I tried the Lidl unit for 5 days and it never improved, so took it back for a refund.

Ré the newer unit above, it can only do 1080 @ 15fps, so in reality it is still a 720p unit; you need at least 30fps to record moving traffic clearly.

I'll look at the next base and the eprance

No sadly it doesnt, but it has infrared so better at night time. Tbh personally i wasnt intrested in GPS, and for the extra money i couldnt justify it. As long as it has a good enough picture to cover me I'm happy

I had a taxi driver roll back into me at 0.00001 mph while stationary and claimed whiplash, no damage whatsoever. Lost 2 years ncb and had to insure my vrs under mrs name now. bstd

I fit the Möbius exclusively. Discreet, good image quality and well priced. It doesn't have GPS but in my view that's a waste of money since it doesn't really give you anything useful. The speed display on one won't pass as evidence as its not a proper calibrated device.

hmm that does seem like a good point

do i really need GPS ?? probably gimmicky but is it vital ??

would a potential court case be won or lost on gps ???

i hate capitalism too many choices when buying goods

What would it give you that a video alone wouldn't? Location - generally obvious from video. Speed - the video would show if your/their speed was appropriate and it can also be worked out by measuring how long it took you to drive between two points anyway.

My first camera had GPS as I wanted an all-singing all-dancing one. I wish I'd kept the extra £100 for something else.

true true thanks

GPS can be useful, but 99.99% of the time it isnt.

The only real reason I can think of is if the rozzers accuse you of doing something naughty in one place when you were actually miles away (ie cloned number plates).

 mini 0801*

also 0805 as a newer option.

Yeah, the capacitor ones are better as they're safer, provided you drive your car every few days. No LIPO battery to overheat and explode. I fit cap conversion kits on most of the Mobius cams I do (including both our own).

. I know it's after the horse has bolted and you have a dash cam now but I have given this advice successfully to someone who like you tried to claim whiplash for four people ( even though one in the car ) who had reversed into them . Anyway there is a company called Argent who are the mediator for insurance injuries ( when I was knocked off my pushbike they got in touch from his insurance ) they refer you to a local sports injury physio who can determine in 5 mins if you are faking it or real , if it's genuine  a full course of physio is paid for and compensation , if you're faking it it's a 2000 pounds fine for fraud in an agreement you sign . Work college that I passed this info on to never heard from them again apart from them giving her 100 pounds for scratch to her bumper , funny that ! Sorry for going off topic but this might be useful to someone

Which Mobius camera do you recommend then?

A very useful post but "defiantly" <sic> a bad case of correct the auto-correct.... "a ice" and "genius". :)

Ah balls, having taken the pssst! Have you got a link or number for these Argent people. Too much background noise in my Google search to be sure of getting the right ones.

Standard Mobius with the wide angle lens, to which I fit the supercap kit in place of the LIPO battery.

No problem, bloody phone, changed it, it had put pond instead of pounds as well! here you go, http://www.argentrehabilitation.com/services/ClientServices.aspx?ContentSectionID=4486

Huskoda, have you had any experience and feedback of image quality when using their remote lens kit to extend the main camera out of sight on the Mobius?.

You got me worried now what's the chances of them exploding in say a nextbase model

I've not heard of a case of one cooking off, but the one in my Blackvue was pretty swollen when I took it apart after it died and I have seen what LIPOs do when they go and I'd not have that possibility a foot from my face in an enclosed space :)
