Steering rack ends failed?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Anybody had issues or known of them with 'steering rack ends' premature wearing.

Had the Roomster in to dealers today, both replaced with 'upgraded' parts as a result of a knocking noise becoming apparent on the O/S.

Car has only done 3k and we owned from new.

Apparently, this has been the case with a few Roomsters and Fabias, hence the upgrade part although I struggled to find anything specific on the web.

I was initially told nothing was wrong and they couldn't hear a noise on test. I persuaded them to get it on a ramp to check and this was the outcome.

I was told that it was only in very early stage and only just inside Skodas margins for replacement.

As I struggled to find any information when trying to identify, just thought I'd put my experience out there for future sufferers.

care to describe the noise it was making

i took my roomster in for a knocking noise was booked in for 2 days with a courtesy car

got to dealers no car available road test with master tech and no noise sent away and told to return if noise persisted

dealer is 30 mile roundtrip and i only have one day a week off so really hard to get back

ours was more like a clonking noise when going over bumps in the road

Sounds similar.

Noticed it mainly on low speed manoeuvres, when parking or going slow over uneven ground.

More like a dull clunking that you could feel through the steering.

I initially thought it was a ball joint or suspension bushing.

Skoda know theres an issue and have distributed information about it.

The tech came back with a printout of the system containing information about it and photos.

I was amazed when they told me there's a known issue that this wasn't the first place they checked.

They went on to tell me that they have had 3 Fabias in within a few months with the same thing.

I don't suppose you saw the bulletin number going to phone dealers again today

I had the same issue on my fabia.I could hear a creaking noise when turning the steering wheel at low speed. The dealer said there is a known issue new track rod ends and 4 wheel alignment under warranty the noise has now gone

I had the steering rack arms replaced under warranty. I had a creaking noise from the steering when turning the steering wheel at low speeds and turning right. The dealer said it was the seconds roomie to have that done. The noise started at 2,000 miles from new.

car is booked in for the 8th of september (first day they had a courtesy car available )

i mentioned the bulletin and she said they will need the car all day as it goes for 4wheel alignment after so fingers crossed they change them

just need to remind them to not wash the car at all afterwards regardless of how many handprints they get on the body

Fingers crossed you get it resolved.

Mine took 3 hours, and did indeed include 4 wheel alignment.

That was with a vacuum of the inside as well but no wash of the bodywork.

Every time my roomie went in to the dealers for oil change and steering rack arms replaced they wash it with a pressure wash. The week before I had polished the paintwork with Autoglym HD wax which has kept the paintwork silky smooth. At £45 per pot Autoglym is expensive for it to be washed off under pressure

Matter of interest. Have you found the steering to feel tighter after the steering rack arms were replaced?

I hadn't, but since you mentioned it, it is possibly.

Although, I think its more psychological due to the lack of an annoying knocking fed back through the steering wheel which was unnerving to be honest.
