2.0 TDI ran almost dry of oil now engine problems

Featured Replies

I have a 2004 Octavia 2.0tdi, I was driving down a road and hit a rock that put a hole straight through the plastic engine guard piercing the oil sump and losing all my oil to the road. I didn't realise until the light came on at which point I turned off the car, dumped all the spare oil I had in the boot in and then restarted it and moved to the side of the road. Judging by the oil line down the road which became very faint in assuming it ran severely low to empty of oil for a little while.

I replaced the sump and oil but now the car has very little power, the turbo intermittently kicks in but not properly like before and it was very smoky at first. If I try to accelerate very little happens. No engine light or error codes. I'm sure the turbo is done for but wondering what else could be and if I should even keep trying to fix it (turbos expensive then could be further engine damage) or sell for parts :(

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks.

Alf.

How many miles has it done, and what spec is it?
I'd look at what a running example is worth and then decide how much it's worth throwing at it.

I suspect that you'll be best off selling it as is.

It's got just over 100,000, its not high spec other than the 2.0 engine but it's really scratched up though well looked after other than that (I live in the countryside,no way to stop it getting scratched really).

In working order its probably a £2000 car.

If it was me I would sell it as it is, but thats just me, 11 years old, scratched :|

Due to the high speeds that they spin at, turbos use sleeve bearings where the shaft 'floats' inside a sleeve on a film of oil, with no metal-to-metal contact. It makes them very, very sensitive to oil starvation.

The turbo is cooked.

A new (reconditioned) one will be around £600 at least.

Like you say though this may just be one fix of several that are now needed.

I'd be selling as 'spares or repair'.
